We visited Naoki Yamamoto’s solo exhibition “Got a Tokarev?” The venue was THE blank GALLERY in Harajuku.

Naoki Yamamoto is an artist with a track record of exhibitions at commercial galleries, but he had put his practice on hold for a period, resuming his activities in 2017. This exhibition marks his first solo show at THE blank GALLERY.

At a glance, the works feel highly original.
His method involves faithfully reproducing images first drawn in Adobe Illustrator using acrylic paint on canvas.
He has had no formal art education and has come this far self-taught, yet one can sense the meticulous, detail-obsessed craftsmanship. It makes sense given his background as a dental technician.
What one senses from the painted surface is a flat, unblemished brush stroke. It’s a beautifully finished matière on par with Hitoshi Tsuboyama’s.
We were told he layers the paint about three times to avoid unevenness.
He also apparently never overlaps adjacent colors of paint.

You can also see a faint, transparent trace along the sides. On closer inspection, a thin, glossy layer resembling glue becomes visible.
This, we learned, is one of his techniques for keeping the paint from peeling off at the edges.

Even with the brushwork remaining flat, the works — where time and space intersect — carry a sense of depth, and we came away with the impression that our own vision was being pleasantly played with.

Naoki Yamamoto는 상업 갤러리에서도 전시 실적이 있는 미술 작가이지만, 최근 몇 년 동안 창작 활동을 잠시 중단했다가 2017년부터 다시 활동을 재개했습니다. 이번 전시는 THE blank GALLERY에서의 첫 개인전입니다.

한 번만 보아도 독창적인 작품이라는 느낌을 받습니다.
제작 기법은, Adobe Illustrator로 그린 이미지를 아크릴 물감과 캔버스로 충실하게 재현하는 방식이라고 합니다.
미술 교육을 받지 않고 독학으로 여기까지 왔다고 하는데, 디테일에 집착하는 치밀한 작업이 느껴집니다. 치과 기공사 커리어를 가지고 있다는 사실도 납득이 갑니다.

화면에서 느껴지는 것은 얼룩 없는 평평한 붓놀림입니다. Hitoshi Tsuboyama에도 뒤지지 않는 아름다운 마티에르입니다.
얼룩이 생기지 않도록 세 번 정도 덧칠한다는 이야기를 들었습니다.
인접한 색의 물감을 겹쳐 칠하는 일도 없다고 합니다.

또한 측면에는 얇고 투명한 자국이 보입니다. 잘 살펴보면, 마치 얇은 풀칠 같은 광택 있는 부분이 드러납니다.
이는 물감이 가장자리에서 벗겨지지 않도록 하기 위한 처리 중 하나라고 합니다.

평평한 붓질이면서도, 시간과 공간이 교차하는 작품에는 깊이가 느껴지는 부분이 있어, 자신의 시각이 유쾌하게 희롱당하는 듯한 인상을 받았습니다.
