We paid a visit to “ARTOTHÈQUE,” the campus gallery of Kyoto University of Art and Design.
The writer visited shortly after its opening, during the two-day ARTOTHÈQUE OPEN GALLERY event (August 30–31, 2019), an invitation-only opening program.
The entrance of ARTOTHÈQUE
ARTOTHÈQUE reportedly means “art library” in French.
For the opening program, works by alumni and current students of Kyoto University of Art and Design were exhibited and offered for sale.
A proper price list was prepared, and sold works were marked with red dot stickers—a style very much reminiscent of a commercial gallery.

The director of ARTOTHÈQUE is Noboru Tsubaki, who is also a professor at Kyoto University of Art and Design.
The director himself gave attentive explanations of the works on display and introduced pieces held in storage, making it an incredibly rewarding space for art lovers.
We were also told that they accept commissioned work, and were shown examples of pieces produced in response to corporate orders.

Summary
Kyoto University of Art and Design is known for its distinctive educational approach. From the moment students enroll, the university emphasizes a professional mindset with a focus on “selling.”
Opinions may be divided on this policy when viewed from a purely arts-education perspective. However, ARTOTHÈQUE’s initiative has already drawn significant attention from art collectors—on opening day, visitors reportedly flooded the space to a degree resembling a packed commuter train (director Noboru Tsubaki noted that the indoor humidity even exceeded 80%).
It left the impression that this initiative is likely to have a major impact on Kyoto’s art scene.
There was a sense that the energy of many artists and works would radiate outward from this place.

我们造访了京都造形大学的校内画廊”ARTOTHÈQUE”。
笔者到访时正值开幕不久,恰逢为期两日的ARTOTHÈQUE OPEN GALLERY(2019年8月30日、31日),是仅面向受邀嘉宾的开幕企划。
교토조형대학의 교내 갤러리 “ARTOTHÈQUE”를 방문했습니다.
필자가 방문한 것은 개관한 지 얼마 되지 않은 시점으로, ARTOTHÈQUE OPEN GALLERY 이틀간 개최(2019년 8월 30일, 31일)의 초대 손님 한정 오프닝 기획이었습니다.
ARTOTHÈQUE의 입구
ARTOTHÈQUE는 프랑스어로 “아트 라이브러리 = 예술 도서관”을 의미한다고 합니다.
오프닝 기획에서는 교토조형대학의 졸업생과 재학생을 중심으로 작품이 전시되어 판매되었습니다.
가격표도 제대로 준비되어 있었고, 판매된 작품에는 빨간 원 스티커로 표시하는 등, 상업 갤러리를 연상케 하는 스타일이었습니다.
새하얗게 깔끔히 도색된 벽면에 작품이 늘어선 모습은 그야말로 갤러리 그 자체. ※사진은 개막 전의 모습
ARTOTHÈQUE의 디렉터는 교토조형예술대학 교수이기도 한 Noboru Tsubaki가 맡고 있습니다.
디렉터가 직접 전시 작품을 정성껏 설명하거나, 수장고에 있는 작품을 소개해 주는 등, 아트 러버에게는 매우 사치스러운 공간이었습니다.
또한 커미션 워크(주문 제작)에도 대응하고 있다고 하며, 기업의 주문에 응해 제작된 작품에 대한 소개도 받았습니다.

정리
교토조형예술대학은 학생 교육 방침이 특징적입니다. 학생 시절부터 프로를 의식하며 “판매하는 것”에 중점을 둡니다.
예술 교육적 관점에서 볼 때 그 방침에는 다양한 의견이 오갈지도 모릅니다. 하지만 ARTOTHÈQUE의 시도에는 이미 아트 컬렉터들이 큰 주목을 보내고 있으며, 첫날에는 방문객들이 몰려들어 만원 전철과 같은 상황이었다고 합니다(실내 습도계가 80%를 넘었다고 Noboru Tsubaki 디렉터가 말씀하셨습니다).
본 시도가 교토의 아트 신에 큰 임팩트를 줄 것 같은 인상을 받았습니다.
많은 작가와 작품의 에너지가 이 장소로부터 확산될 것 같은 예감이 있었습니다.
