Ayako Ishiba’s work was also on view at VOCA 2019 not long ago.
She continues her practice while serving as an educational research advisor at Aichi University of the Arts.
At first glance her pieces look like casual photographs of everyday scenes, but a closer look reveals that although the motifs are three-dimensional in reality, they reach the eye as flat, two-dimensional imagery.

Every piece on view looks flat, but none of them have been processed digitally with image-editing tools.
Quite the opposite: they are made using an extremely analog, primitive method.

The secret — as you can see if you look closely at the photograph (and really, do see the actual works in person) — is that Ishiba draws (or rather, fills in) outlines on the physical objects that serve as her motifs, using a black marker.
How does that strike you? Even though they are photographs, they feel painterly, don’t they?
Most of the subjects on view are drawn from utterly everyday scenes.
When we asked her why, the reply was as follows.
Writer: Is there any particular meaning or intention behind using everyday scenes as your subjects?
Ayako Ishiba:
What I found interesting about contemporary art is the sense that just shifting your viewpoint can make a common, ordinary scene look completely different.
When I was a student, seeing James Turrell’s Open Field at the Chichu Art Museum (Naoshima) profoundly changed the way I thought about planes of color.
It leads to a playful daydream: what if even a fragment of everyday life — a pedestrian crossing, a street poster — actually continues deeper inside?
I don’t consciously set out to shoot everyday things; I think it comes from my desire to interpret the life I lead now, joyfully, through my work.
The act of standing before the work and checking one’s own vision and perception is such an enjoyable form of viewing that I found myself wanting to see many more of her pieces.

我之所以觉得现代艺术有趣,是因为发现:只要转换一下视角,平凡的日常风景也会呈现出完全不同的面貌。
学生时代,我在地中美术馆(直岛)看到 James Turrell 的作品 Open Field,自己对色面的意识发生了很大的改变。
比如说,斑马线、街头的海报,即便只是日常生活的一部分,是否也可能延伸向更深处?这样的联想让人不禁遐想。
我并没有刻意去拍摄日常之物,只是我想通过作品,把当下的生活愉快地重新解读一遍——这大概是根本的理由吧。
站在作品前,像是在确认自己视觉与认知的观赏方式非常有趣,让人想要一次看到更多她的作品。
此外,今后的日程如下:
・beyond2020 系列展览(9 月下旬阿姆斯特丹、11 月上旬巴黎、下旬于东京 IMA gallery 举办)
・Sapporo Art Stage 2019(11 月 3 日~24 日)也将参展。

Aichi Triennale 2019를 찾았습니다.
얼마 전에는 VOCA 2019에서도 작품이 전시되었던 Ayako Ishiba.
Aichi University of the Arts에서 교육 연구 지도원을 맡으면서 창작 활동을 이어가고 있습니다.
얼핏 보면 일상의 풍경을 찍은 담담한 사진 작품처럼 보이지만, 자세히 보면 사진 속 모티프는 입체적(3차원)임에도 시각 정보로는 평면적(2차원)으로 전해집니다.

모티프로는 지극히 일상적인 풍경이 많이 전시되어 있었습니다.
이유를 여쭙자, 다음과 같은 대답이 돌아왔습니다.
필자: 모티프로 일상적인 풍경을 택하시는 데에는 어떤 의미나 의도가 있으신가요?
Ayako Ishiba:
현대미술이 흥미롭다고 느낀 것은, 시점을 바꾸는 것만으로도 일상의 흔한 풍경이 전혀 다르게 보인다고 느꼈기 때문입니다.
학생 시절에 본 Chichu Art Museum(나오시마)의 James Turrell 작품 Open Field는, 색면에 대한 저의 의식을 크게 바꿔놓았습니다.
예를 들면 횡단보도나 거리의 포스터 같은 일상의 한 조각이라도, 어쩌면 그 안쪽 깊은 곳까지 이어져 있을지도 모른다……라는 즐거운 상상으로 이어집니다.
의도해서 일상적인 것들을 촬영하는 것은 아니지만, 지금의 삶을 작품을 통해 즐겁게 해석해 나가고 싶다는 마음이 있기 때문일 겁니다.
작품과 마주하며 자신의 시각과 인식을 재확인하는 듯한 감상 방식이 즐거워, 그녀의 작품을 더 많이 보고 싶다는 생각이 들었습니다.
앞으로의 일정으로는 아래와 같은 전시가 예정되어 있습니다.
