CONTACT: Connecting and Binding — Art of Japan and the World
For eight days from Sunday, September 1 to Sunday, September 8, 2019, in commemoration of the ICOM (International Council of Museums) Kyoto General Conference, the exhibition “CONTACT: Connecting and Binding — Art of Japan and the World” will be held under the theme of the points of contact between Japanese and international art.
The venue is the UNESCO World Heritage Site Kiyomizu-dera. For the first time in its 1,200-year history, the temple will host an exhibition bringing together works that transcend genres — Western modern painting, contemporary art, literature, manga, and film. Visitors can enjoy the exhibits along with the magnificent garden (normally closed to the public) designed by Kobori Enshu.
Additionally, novelist Maha Harada, who serves as the exhibition’s general director, has written a novel titled “20 CONTACTS: Brief Encounters with the Undying Stars,” inspired by this exhibition and published by Gentosha. At the exhibition, a free tabloid featuring Maha Harada’s commentary on all works and excerpts from the novel will be distributed.

Highlights of the Exhibition
1. Japanese and international art influencing each other, gathering across genres
Japanese and international art have long shared points of contact, stimulating and influencing one another.
By presenting works together — from foreign artists who actively engaged with Japan, such as Paul Cezanne, who discovered new modes of expression through Japanese art; Genichiro Inokuma, who studied under Matisse in the South of France; Alberto Giacometti, who had deep exchanges with philosopher Isaku Yanaihara; and Gerhard Richter, who has held solo exhibitions in Japan for more than a quarter-century — alongside Japanese artists who have been internationally active, the exhibition explores how Japanese and international art have converged. Beyond fine art, the show also features unique cross-genre displays spanning literature, manga, and film.
2. The first-ever exhibition of Western modern paintings and contemporary art installations at the UNESCO World Heritage Site Kiyomizu-dera
The venue itself is a cultural treasure representative of Japan — the UNESCO World Heritage Site Kiyomizu-dera. Temples have long housed court painters and commissioned and presented their works, giving them a long history as patrons of art — in a sense, the origin of the museum in Japan — making this venue especially fitting for an exhibition commemorating the ICOM Kyoto General Conference.
Both the display of works against the beautiful garden of Jojuin (normally closed to the public), and the presentation of Gerhard Richter’s video piece in the Kyodo (Sutra Repository) will provide visitors with a special viewing experience. Furthermore, an installation by contemporary artist Izumi Kato will be shown in the free-access zones (viewable without a ticket) at the front-entrance Important Cultural Property Nishi-mon (West Gate) — one of Japan’s top Instagram spots — and Umatodome, offering visitors from around the world who visit Kiyomizu-dera an opportunity to encounter art.

*About the UNESCO World Heritage Site Kiyomizu-dera
Said to have been founded during the Heian period by Sakanoue no Tamuramaro, seii taishogun (great general who subdues barbarians). The precincts feature more than 30 halls and monuments, including National Treasures and Important Cultural Properties, many of which were rebuilt in the early Edo period by the third shogun, Tokugawa Iemitsu. The main hall is affectionately known as the “Stage of Kiyomizu,” and the view from the stage is spectacular. It was registered as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site in 1994.
3. The organizer and general director is novelist Maha Harada

This exhibition was conceived by novelist Maha Harada, who has a background as a curator, resonating with the founding mission of ICOM — established after World War II — to reunite a world divided by war through museums. As an initiator, she serves as general director of the project, timed to coincide with the ICOM Kyoto General Conference.
The exhibition was born of a desire to make ICOM more widely known to the general public, and, at the same time, to introduce the 3,000 museum specialists gathering from around the world to the wonderful museums throughout Japan and the many masterpieces held within them.
At the venue, Maha Harada’s commentary on all works, along with excerpts from her short novel “20 CONTACTS: Brief Encounters with the Undying Stars” (scheduled for release in August by Gentosha), will be printed in a tabloid and distributed for free. 相传由平安时代征夷大将军Sakanoue no Tamuramaro所开创。境内有30余处伽蓝与碑石，含国宝与重要文化财，多为江户时代初期第三代将军Tokugawa Iemitsu重建。本堂被亲切地称为”清水舞台”，从舞台眺望的景色美不胜收，于1994年（平成6年）被列入世界文化遗产。
2019년 9월 1일(일)~8일(일)까지 8일간, ICOM(국제박물관협의회) 교토대회를 기념하여, 일본과 세계 아트의 접점(CONTACT)을 주제로 한 “CONTACT 잇다·묶다 일본과 세계의 아트”展이 개최됩니다.
전시장은 세계유산 기요미즈데라입니다. 그 1200년 역사상 처음으로 서양 근대회화, 현대미술, 문학, 만화, 영화 등 장르를 넘나드는 작품들이 한자리에 모이는 전시가 열립니다. Kobori Enshu가 조성한 뛰어난 정원(평시 비공개)과 함께 전시를 감상하실 수 있습니다.
또한 본 전시의 총감독을 맡은 소설가 Maha Harada가 본 전시를 무대로 새로 집필한 소설 “20 CONTACTS 사라지지 않는 별들과의 짧은 접촉”을 겐토샤에서 간행합니다. 전시에서는 Maha Harada가 집필한 전 작품 해설과 소설의 일부를 게재한 타블로이드 신문을 무료로 배포합니다.

본 전시의 볼거리
1. 서로 영향을 주고받는 일본과 세계 아트가 장르를 넘어 집결
일본과 세계 아트는 접점을 가지며 서로 자극을 주고 영향을 주고받아 왔습니다.
일본 미술을 통해 새로운 표현을 발견한 Paul Cezanne, 남프랑스에서 Matisse에게 사사한 Genichiro Inokuma, 철학자 Isaku Yanaihara와 깊은 교류를 나눈 Alberto Giacometti, 사반세기 이상 일본에서 개인전을 이어온 Gerhard Richter 등 일본과 적극적으로 접촉한 외국인 아티스트, 그리고 국제적으로 활약한 일본인 아티스트의 작품을 함께 전시함으로써 일본과 세계 아트가 어떻게 융합되어 왔는가를 조망합니다. 아울러 미술뿐 아니라 문학, 만화, 영화 등 장르를 넘나드는 독특한 전시 또한 볼거리입니다.
2. 세계유산 기요미즈데라에서 최초로 이루어지는 서양 근대회화 전시와 현대미술 인스톨레이션
전시장은 그 자체가 일본을 대표하는 문화재인 세계문화유산 기요미즈데라입니다. 사원은 본래 궁정 화가를 두고 작품을 창작·발표해 온 예술의 옹호자로서 오랜 역사를 지니며, 이른바 일본 미술관의 원점이라 할 수 있는 존재로, ICOM 교토대회를 기념하는 본 전시의 회장으로 실로 어울리는 장소라 할 수 있습니다.
평소 비공개인 “죠주인(成就院)”의 아름다운 정원을 배경으로 한 작품 전시, “경장(經堂)”에서의 Gerhard Richter 영상 작품 공개는 관람객에게 특별한 감상 체험을 선사합니다. 또한 일본 굴지의 인스타그램 명소인 입구 정면 중요문화재 “니시몬(西門)”, “우마토도메(馬駐)” 자유구역(티켓 없이 관람 가능)에서는 현대 아티스트 Izumi Kato의 인스톨레이션을 전시하여, 기요미즈데라를 찾는 전 세계 관람객에게 아트를 접할 기회를 제공합니다.

*세계문화유산 기요미즈데라에 관하여
헤이안 시대에 세이이 다이쇼군 Sakanoue no Tamuramaro가 개창한 것으로 전해집니다. 경내에는 국보 및 중요문화재를 포함한 30개 이상의 가람과 비석이 늘어서 있으며, 이들 대부분은 에도 시대 초 3대 쇼군 Tokugawa Iemitsu에 의해 재건된 것입니다. 본당은 “기요미즈의 무대”로 친숙하며, 무대에서의 조망은 훌륭하고, 1994년(헤이세이 6년) 세계문화유산에 등재되었습니다.

본 전시는 큐레이터 경력을 지닌 소설가 Maha Harada가, 제2차 세계대전 후 발족한 ICOM의 “전쟁으로 분단된 세계를 뮤지엄으로 다시 잇는다”는 설립 취지에 공감하여, ICOM 교토대회 개최에 맞춰 스스로 발기인이 되어 총감독을 맡은 기획입니다.
ICOM의 존재를 대중에게 더욱 널리 알리고 싶다는 바람, 그리고 동시에 세계 각지에서 모여드는 3,000명의 뮤지엄 전문가들에게 일본 각지에 존재하는 훌륭한 미술관들과 그곳에 소장된 수많은 명작들을 알리고 싶다는 바람에서 이 전시는 태어났습니다.
