Art Basel Hong Kong 2019
For the first time as an art collector, I attended an art fair held overseas — Art Basel Hong Kong.
When it comes to name recognition, the caliber of participating galleries, and the roster of celebrated artists on view, ask anyone and Art Basel will be named the world’s foremost art fair. If my first overseas trip was going to be anywhere, it had to be Basel — that was my mind made up from the start.
Art Basel Hong Kong 2019
Art Basel is held three times a year. Starting with Basel in Switzerland (June), followed by Miami (December) and Hong Kong (March).
If I was going to attend for the first time, it would be Hong Kong — easily accessible from Japan — so I made up my mind to visit, planning a three-day, two-night trip.
Here I’ve summarized a few impressions I gathered from this single visit.
The above are my own reports; in this article, I would like to share my impressions as a participating art collector, alongside comments from other collectors.
Three collectors look back on Basel Hong Kong
This article is a project in which three art collectors, including myself, look back on our visit to Art Basel Hong Kong — a first-time experience for all of us. *These are personal impressions, so please take them as one point of reference.

All of us had already visited Art Fair Tokyo multiple times, and this trip to Art Basel Hong Kong was our first overseas art fair experience.

Dates attended
Art Basel Hong Kong runs for five days. The first half is VIP-only, and the second half opens to the general public.
Mr. H: March 26–28, three days / two nights. March 26: Art Central Hong Kong; March 27: Art Basel Hong Kong. Mr. M: Stayed in Hong Kong for 2.5 days, visited Basel twice (public entry), Central twice, Asia Contemporary Art Show at the Conrad Hotel once, and toured the surrounding galleries. Cut into sleep to sightsee mornings and evenings as well. Bur@rt press editor: A three-day, two-night trip. On public days: Basel once, Central twice, Asia Contemporary Art Show once, plus a tour of the surrounding galleries.
Same-day tickets for Basel Hong Kong sold out very quickly.
Purpose of attending
I would like to start by introducing each collector’s purpose for attending.
Mr. H: This time, I received an invitation from a gallery I have a relationship with, and I also wanted to actually experience Art Basel, one of the world’s premier art events, in person. It was my first overseas art fair.
Mr. M: Contemporary art centers on Europe and the United States. I had wanted to see galleries and fairs on a global scale for some time. And whenever I heard people talk about Basel, they all urged me to go, saying it was absolutely worth it.
Up until last year, I had only seen photos of the venue on SNS and the like; this year, I could no longer suppress my desire to feel that heat in person.
Bur@rt press editor: I had no experience of overseas art fairs, so I wanted to check where my own collection stood in a global context. Also, to watch the latest trends.
On top of that, since I had blown my budget at the Art Fair Tokyo held just before, my budget was effectively “0” — I went in purely with viewing in mind. My aim this time was strictly to study.
Outcomes
Mr. H: Acquired two three-dimensional works at Basel and one two-dimensional work at Central.
Mr. M: No purchases. About three important works by an artist collected by a gallery I have a close relationship with were on display, but they had all sold out on First Choice day (VIP-only preview).
Bur@rt press editor: On a certain gallery’s negotiation table, two acrylic objets by Julian Opie (promotional items made at the time of his solo show) were being sold for 500 Hong Kong dollars each. I expressed interest in purchasing them, but they only accepted cash, so I had to give up.
I also saw cash transactions happening at Art Central Hong Kong.
What was good about attending
We received multiple answers on the good points of attending Basel Hong Kong.
・After the opening, I was honored to be invited by galleries and artists to join the after-party, which was very memorable. (Mr. H)
・The exhibition at the gallery that gave me a VIP pass was a huge success, and I was very happy and honored that I was able to acquire a piece from that very well-received show. (Mr. H)
・When I saw the giant KAWS at Victoria Harbour, I was thrilled and excited. (Mr. H)
・I could feel the heat of contemporary art on a global scale, and witnessing the aura of the overseas celebrities on site was truly inspiring. (Mr. M)
Having gone to Basel, I felt that domestic gallerists could sense I am seriously engaged with art. (Mr. M)
・The venue overflowing with art was the ultimate space. Just plain fun! (Bur@rt press editor)
・I was able to feel the latest art trends firsthand. I also learned about galleries’ strategies of changing the works they present depending on the region where a fair is held. (Bur@rt press editor)
Someone (a younger artist) at Basel Hong Kong noted that “there were many works using mirrors and thickly-applied paintings,” and I felt the same way.A work using mirrors
Points to reflect on
Being a first-time visit, it was a stream of first-time experiences. Below is a summary of points to reflect on. I hope this may help those planning to visit in the future.
・My attire was too casual, so I felt I was not taken seriously as a collector. Consider TPO and at least wear a jacket. That said, for footwear, comfortable sneakers are recommended. (Mr. M)
・If you are seriously aiming to purchase, you really should attend First Choice. (Mr. M)
・I was truly exhausted. (It took about a week to recover physically after returning home.) One more day would have made things much easier. (Mr. M)
・Since numerous art-related side events are held around the same time, I should have gathered information in advance. (Bur@rt press editor)
・I hadn’t gathered local information, so my local food and free-time sightseeing were half-hearted. (Bur@rt press editor)
Many art auctions besides Sotheby’s seem to have been held.
Differences from Art Fair Tokyo
The fellow collectors had already experienced Japan’s biggest fair, Art Fair Tokyo. They shared their thoughts on the differences between the two.
・I went to Hong Kong thinking Art Basel would be the main event, but the moment I saw Art Central Hong Kong I was already overwhelmed. (Mr. H)
・Compared with Japanese art fairs, the individual works were larger, and the booths themselves were larger too. (Mr. H)
・I could see visitors from all sorts of nationalities. There were many people with an over-the-top celebrity vibe. It really did feel like a global event. (Mr. H)
・I attended the openings of both Central and Basel, and compared with openings of Japanese art fairs, the ratio of younger visitors felt higher. (Mr. H)
The venue offered rest areas with drinks and light snacks (paid).
・The scale of the venue, the size of the booths, the size of the works — everything was big. (Mr. M)
・Tickets sold out and it seemed clear that visitor numbers far exceeded those in Tokyo. (Mr. M)
・From the public days, many local young people came without any intent to purchase, which was arguably a negative element, but this is a result of the branding whereby simply attending Basel is seen as cool. (Mr. M)
・Compared to Art Fair Tokyo, the scale is on a completely different level. To even compare them feels almost apologetic. (Bur@rt press editor)
・There were many high-priced works, which felt out of reach for the average art collector. (Bur@rt press editor)
・Not a single “bijinga” (portrait of beauties) work — popular in Japan — could be found. I realized it is completely a local movement. (Bur@rt press editor)
Several installation works were exhibited. A large work by Chiharu Shiota also made an appearance.
Conclusion
Finally, I would like to close by presenting each participant’s wrap-up.
Mr. H: Above all, I was overwhelmed by a scale utterly different from Japanese art fairs.
On reflection, even having traveled to Hong Kong, my viewing and purchasing ended up centered on Japanese galleries; I wish I had done more research beforehand to engage with overseas artists and galleries.
Be that as it may, it was my first Art Basel Hong Kong. While there are points to reflect on, I feel the gains were substantial, and I hope to attend again next year.
Mr. M: Regardless of personal taste, everything shown at international galleries and Basel-exhibiting galleries was of high caliber and quality. But everything was expensive (overwhelmingly so, for me). Even so, Japanese galleries and works held their own on the world stage. If anything, I thought some were superior, and in certain areas even leading. Moreover, they gave me the impression of being reasonably priced compared to the above.
Having attended Basel for the first time, I felt I would still want to buy works by Japanese artists at Japanese galleries going forward. That said, I have not seen other markets — Switzerland, the United States, the United Kingdom, etc. — so I also felt I still have much to learn.
Bur@rt press editor: My first overseas art fair — and Basel, no less! I was in high spirits inside the venue and enjoyed myself immensely. I walked back and forth across the floor and expended more energy than expected, but since I visited on a public day, that was probably unavoidable. What left the strongest impression was the visitors, mostly young women, taking pictures with smartphones. I was overwhelmed by an atmosphere so different from Japan’s art scene, but that behavior differs from people who visit to purchase — so for those with purchasing in mind, I recommend going in the first half of the fair’s run.

作为艺术藏家,我首次前往在海外举办的艺术博览会——Art Basel Hong Kong。
无论是知名度、参展画廊的水准,还是参展的知名艺术家阵容,任谁来评价,Art Basel 都堪称世界顶级的艺术博览会。若要首次远征海外,那就一定是”Basel”——我早已下定决心。

Art Basel 一年举办三次。以瑞士 Basel(6月)为首,还有 Miami(12月)和 Hong Kong(3月)。
若首次前往,从日本出发交通最便捷的当属”Hong Kong”,于是我下定决心,安排了三天两夜的行程前往。
以下是我总结的一些此次访问的感受。
以上是笔者的报告,而本文将以艺术藏家的身份,连同其他藏家的评论一并呈现参展感想。

参加目的
首先介绍各位藏家的参加目的。
H 先生:此次承蒙有往来的画廊邀请,同时也希望亲身感受 Art Basel 这一世界级艺术盛会的氛围,因此前往参加。这是我首次参加海外艺术博览会。
M 先生:当代艺术以欧美为中心。此前一直希望能以世界规模来观察画廊与博览会。此外,向众多人士打听 Basel,都强烈建议”绝对值得一去”。
去年为止仅通过 SNS 等观看会场照片,今年已按捺不住想要亲临现场感受那股热情的心情。

另外,由于紧接其前的 Art Fair Tokyo 已经”散财”,预算基本为”0″,纯以观展为目的前往。此次目的仅为学习。
参加成果
H 先生:在 Basel 收藏 2 件立体作品,在 Central 收藏 1 件平面作品。
M 先生:无购入。在关系密切的画廊中,有一位我持续收藏的艺术家的 3 件重要作品参展,但在 First Choice(仅 VIP 入场日)已全部售罄。
・原本以为 Art Basel 是主看点才前往 Hong Kong,但看到 Art Central Hong Kong 的那一刻便已被震撼。(H 先生)
・与日本的艺术博览会相比,单件作品更大,展位本身也更大。(H 先生)
・切身感受到不同国籍的观众前来观展。不乏气场十足的名流般人物。深切体会到这果然是世界级的活动。(H 先生)
・参加了 Central 与 Basel 的开幕,与日本艺术博览会的开幕相比,感觉年轻观众的比例更高。(H 先生)
会场还设有休息区,提供饮料与轻食(付费)。
・会场规模、展位面积、作品尺寸,一切都很大。(M 先生)
・门票会 sold out 等等,观众人数明显多于 Tokyo。(M 先生)
・自公众开放日起,许多并非以购买为目的的当地年轻人前来,虽有负面因素,但这也是”到 Basel 就是潮流”这一品牌力所带来的结果。(M 先生)
・与 Art Fair Tokyo 规模差距过于悬殊。相比之下几乎不好意思拿来比较。(Bur@rt press 编辑)
・高价位作品居多,对普通艺术藏家而言门槛偏高。(Bur@rt press 编辑)
・在日本颇受欢迎的“美人画”一件也未见到。深感这完全是本土风潮。(Bur@rt press 编辑)

总结
最后,附上各人的总结以作收尾。
H 先生:总之,与日本的艺术博览会截然不同的规模令我震撼。
反思之处在于,即便远赴 Hong Kong,观赏与购买仍以日本画廊为主,若能事先多做功课,接触更多海外艺术家与画廊就好了。
无论如何,首次的 Art Basel Hong Kong,虽有可反思之处,但收获亦丰,期待明年也能参加。
M 先生:国际画廊与参展 Basel 的作品无论各自偏好如何,水准与品质皆上乘。但一切都很贵(对我来说压倒性地贵)。在此之中,日本的画廊与作品在世界舞台上毫不逊色。反而,我觉得部分作品更胜一筹,在某些领域甚至具有引领性。而且相较之下,给人以物美价廉的印象。
首次参加 Basel 后,今后仍想在日本画廊购入日本艺术家的作品。当然,我尚未走访瑞士、美国、英国等其他市场,深感自己仍需继续学习。

아트 컬렉터로서 처음으로 해외 개최 아트 페어인 Art Basel Hong Kong에 다녀왔습니다.
Art Basel은 인지도, 참가 갤러리의 수준, 저명 작가의 출품 등, 누가 답하더라도 세계 최고봉의 아트 페어라 할 수 있을 것입니다. 처음 해외로 원정한다면 “Basel”! 이라고 이미 마음을 정하고 있었습니다.

Art Basel은 1년에 세 번 개최됩니다. 스위스의 Basel(6월)을 필두로, Miami(12월), Hong Kong(3월)입니다.
처음 간다면, 일본에서 접근이 용이한 “Hong Kong”이겠지, 하는 판단으로 방문을 결심하고, 2박 3일의 일정으로 가기로 결정했습니다.
이번 한 번의 방문에서 느낀 몇 가지 사항을 정리해 두었습니다.
위는 필자의 리포트입니다만, 본 기사는 아트 컬렉터로서 참가한 소감을 다른 컬렉터분들의 코멘트도 포함해 전해 드리고자 합니다.

참가 목적
각 컬렉터의 참가 목적부터 소개하고자 합니다.
H 씨: 이번에는 왕래가 있는 갤러리로부터의 초청이 있었고, 또한 역시 Art Basel이라는 세계적인 미술 이벤트를 실제로 체감하고 싶다는 마음에 참가했습니다. 해외 아트 페어는 처음입니다.
M 씨: 현대미술은 유럽·미국이 중심. 예전부터 세계 규모로 갤러리와 페어를 보고 싶었습니다. 또한 여러 분에게 Basel 이야기를 들으면 반드시 가 봐야 한다고 권유받습니다.
지난해까지는 SNS 등으로 회장 내 사진 등을 보고 있었고, 올해는 그 열기를 현지에서 체감하고 싶다는 마음을 억누를 수 없었습니다.

또한 직전의 Art Fair Tokyo에서 예산을 다 써 버렸기 때문에, 예산상은 “0”이라는 관람 목적만으로 뛰어들었습니다. 어디까지나 공부라는 자세로 임한 것이 이번의 목적.
참가 성과
H 씨: Basel에서 입체 작품 2점, Central에서 평면 작품 1점을 소장.
M 씨: 구입한 것은 없음.친하게 지내는 갤러리에서 컬렉션 중인 작가의 귀중한 작품이 3점 정도 출품되어 있었으나, First Choice(VIP만 입장 가능한 날)에서 매진되었습니다.

참가하여 좋았던 점
Basel Hong Kong에 참가하여 좋았던 점을 복수 응답으로 받았습니다.
・오프닝 종료 후 갤러리 여러분 및 아티스트분들과 애프터 파티에 참가할 수 있었던 것이 매우 영광스러웠고 기념이 되었습니다. (H 씨)
・VIP 패스를 받은 갤러리의 전시가 대성황이었다는 점, 또한 그 대성황이었던 작품을 소장할 수 있었던 것이 매우 기쁘고 영광스럽게 생각합니다. (H 씨)
・Victoria Harbour에서 거대 KAWS를 본 순간은 너무 기뻐서 흥분했습니다. (H 씨)
・세계 기준으로 현대미술의 열기를 체감할 수 있었고, 그 자리에 있는 해외 셀럽들의 아우라를 직접 목격할 수 있었던 것은 매우 자극이 되었습니다. (M 씨)

반성할 점
첫 참가인 만큼 첫 경험의 연속이었습니다. 아래에 반성점을 정리해 두었습니다. 앞으로 방문을 계획하시는 분께 힌트가 되었으면 합니다.
・복장이 지나치게 캐주얼했기에 컬렉터로서 상대해 주지 않은 느낌이었습니다. TPO를 고려해 최소한 재킷 정도는 걸치는 편이 좋습니다. 다만, 발밑은 걷기 편한 스니커즈를 추천합니다. (M 씨)
・본격적으로 구입 목적이라면 역시 First Choice에 참가해야 합니다. (M 씨)
・정말로 지쳤습니다. (귀국 후 체력 회복에 1주일 정도 소요) 하루 더 있었다면 훨씬 편했을 것입니다. (M 씨)

Art Fair Tokyo와의 차이
일본 최대의 Art Fair Tokyo는 컬렉터 여러분도 이미 경험한 바 있었습니다. 두 페어의 차이를 말씀해 주셨습니다.
・메인은 Art Basel이라 생각하고 Hong Kong에 갔지만, Art Central Hong Kong을 본 시점에 이미 압도되었습니다. (H 씨)
・일본의 아트 페어에 비해 작품 하나하나가 컸고, 부스 자체도 컸습니다. (H 씨)
・다양한 국적의 분들이 관람하러 오시는 것을 실감했습니다. 셀럽 느낌이 남다른 분들도 많았습니다. 역시 세계적인 이벤트라는 것을 새삼 느꼈습니다. (H 씨)

마지막으로 각자의 정리를 실어 마무리하고자 합니다.
H 씨: 어쨌든 일본의 아트 페어와는 다른 스케일의 크기에 압도되었습니다.
반성점으로는, Hong Kong까지 가서도 관람과 구입이 일본 갤러리 중심이 되어 버린 부분이 있어, 조금 더 사전 조사를 하고 해외 작가와 갤러리를 접해 왔더라면 좋았을 것이라고 생각합니다.
어쨌든, 첫 Art Basel Hong Kong. 반성할 점이 있음에도 얻은 바도 컸다고 생각하며, 내년에도 참가할 수 있으면 좋겠다고 생각했습니다.
M 씨: 국제적인 갤러리와 Basel 출품작은 취향의 차이가 있을지언정 모두 수준이 높고 질 좋은 것뿐이었습니다. 그러나 전부 비쌉니다(저에게는 압도적으로). 그런 가운데 일본의 갤러리와 작품은 세계 무대에서 전혀 밀리지 않았습니다. 오히려 뛰어나다고 생각했고, 일부에서는 오히려 선도하고 있습니다. 게다가 위에 비해 가격이 저렴한 인상을 받았습니다.
이번에 Basel에 처음 참가하여, 앞으로도 일본 갤러리에서 일본 작가의 작품을 사고 싶다고 생각했습니다. 그렇다고 하나, 스위스, 미국, 영국 등 다른 시장을 본 것은 아니므로 아직 공부가 더 필요하다고도 느꼈습니다.
Bur@rt press 편집자: 첫 해외 아트 페어, 그것도 Basel! 이라는 이유로 회장 내에서는 텐션이 높아 매우 즐겁게 보낼 수 있었습니다. 장내를 오가느라 예상 이상으로 체력을 소모했지만, 일반 공개일에 방문했기 때문에 어쩔 수 없는 부분이겠지요. 가장 인상적이었던 점은 젊은 여성을 중심으로 스마트폰으로 촬영하는 방문객들이었습니다. 일본의 미술 사정과는 다른 분위기에 압도되었지만, 구입 목적으로 방문하는 분과는 다른 행동이기에, 구입 목적의 분은 회기 전반에 가시기를 권합니다.
