I visited Atsuko Yamashita’s solo exhibition “Call Me by Your Name.”
The venue is Maki Fine Arts in Asakusabashi.
The title of this exhibition is borrowed from the film “Call Me by Your Name” directed by Luca Guadagnino and starring Timothée Chalamet.
This is her first solo exhibition since May 2018. This time the show occupies a wider space, including the second floor that was not used during the previous two-person exhibition.
The show centers on works produced during Atsuko Yamashita’s three-week stay in Paris, France.
First Floor
Since the solo exhibition was held in the same venue, I could appreciate the works while sensing the differences from the previous show.
What left the strongest impression was the series depicting the Paris night sky.
The blue that Atsuko Yamashita produces feels more beautiful and deeper than that of any other artist.
Her brushwork is light and soft in touch, with real depth, evoking the beauty of the night sky and stars.
Embedding multiple works within a single frame was another enjoyable technique.
Perhaps her pencil works represent a new approach.
Compared to the last exhibition, there seemed to be more works incorporating greenery and flowers as motifs.
These works suit the white-walled space beautifully.
A notebook resembling a diary was also on display. It was delightful.
Second Floor
This time the exhibition extended into the second-floor space as well.
A box filled with numerous drawings. Visitors are free to browse them.
Merchandise
Small works made by cutting up canvases were sold for 1,000 yen (tax included) and were selling well to young visitors.
The highlight was the original sweets.
Icing cookies based on the motifs of her works were sold by “Sucre.”
Sales seemed stronger than at the previous exhibition, with red dot stickers standing out prominently.
Atsuko Yamashita is still a young artist.
Great things are expected from her in the years ahead!

本展のタイトルはルカ・グァダニーノ監督、ティモシー・シャラメ主演の映画「君の名前で僕を呼んで」から引用されています。
同じ場所で開催された個展ですので、前回との違いがどのような点にあるのかを感じながら鑑賞することが出来ました。
複数作品を額の中に埋め込む作品も楽しい技でした。
鉛筆を使った作品は新しいアプローチでしょうか。
前回よりも緑や花をモチーフに取り入れた作品が多いように感じました。
ドローイングがたくさん入った箱。自由に見られます。
注目はオリジナルのスイーツ。
