I went to see Keika Kanba’s solo exhibition, held at Roentgenwerke (Bakurocho / Asakusabashi).

At the front, the largest work: “Niji”
Keika Kanba’s first solo exhibition in four years, since 2013. Taking the delicacy of the human condition as her theme, she has expressed the human body through a distinctive style of depiction. This time she puts forward the concept “Ω ohm” (ohm = electrical resistance), turning her gaze toward human existence, which at first glance appears fragile.
Just what is this thing we call a human being? She depicts that existence—one that conceals strength within its weakness—in figures built up gradually, layer upon layer, in extremely pale colors.

“Resistance”—the keyword she focused on in order to express human strength.
We expend energy by resisting, and the women in her works are rendered with pale, delicate touches, appearing at first glance to be extremely fragile beings. Even so, the venom that emerges from each individual work seems to bare its fangs at the “indifference” that pervades our age, and that is what makes them so distinctive.

2013년 이후 4년 만에 열리는 Keika Kanba의 개인전. 인간 존재의 섬세함을 주제로 독특한 화법으로 인체를 표현해 왔다. 이번에는 “Ω ohm”(옴=전기저항)이라는 콘셉트를 내세워, 언뜻 약해 보이는 인간의 존재에 시선을 향한다.
도대체 인간이라는 존재는 무엇인가? 약함 속에 강함을 감춘 그 존재를, 지극히 옅은 색으로 조금씩 덧칠해 쌓아 올린 인물로 그려낸다.

인간의 강함을 표현하기 위해 주목한 키워드 “저항”.
인간은 저항함으로써 에너지를 소모하는 법인데, 작품 속 여성은 옅은 터치로 그려져 언뜻 매우 연약한 존재로 비쳐 보입니다. 그럼에도 하나하나의 작품마다 배어 나오는 독기가 현대에 만연한 “무관심”을 향해 이빨을 드러내는 듯하여 인상적입니다.
