Alex Kanevsky has not previously had an opportunity to show his work in Japan.
Born in Rostov-on-Don, Russia, in 1963, and now based in the United States, he is a painter of high international standing.

104 INTRODUCES
104GALERIE (Meguro, Tokyo), a gallery that actively organizes exhibitions of overseas painters, presents the group show “104 INTRODUCES.” Composed of five artists making their Japan debut, the show includes Alex Kanevsky, whose work is being exhibited in Japan for the first time as part of it.
This is a rare chance for Japanese audiences to encounter Kanevsky, a painter whose singular pictorial language has drawn wide acclaim. It reportedly took repeated offers from 104GALERIE before this participation was finally realized.

Green Coat
A new painting commissioned for this exhibition, Green Coat.
Advance inquiries reportedly poured in from both inside and outside Japan.
This may be hard to make out in reproduction, but the blue background is underpainted with reddish tones.

Female Nude Sliding off a Painting
A nude painting, one of the signature series in Kanevsky’s practice.
The layered, intricately entwined paint surface is striking.
The work is roughly F8 in size, small enough that it really rewards seeing in person.

The paint layer turned out to be thinner and more brushy than I had imagined.
Only two pieces, but seeing Kanevsky’s work in person for the first time was a captivating experience.
The gallery director spoke about wanting to mount a solo show for him at some point in the future.
That day is very much worth looking forward to.

해외 화가들의 전시를 적극적으로 기획하는 104GALERIE(도쿄 메구로)의 그룹전 “104 INTRODUCES.” 본 전시는 일본 최초 공개 아티스트 5명으로 구성되어 있으며, 그 중 한 명으로 Alex Kanevsky의 작품이 일본에서 처음 전시되었습니다.
화가로서 독특한 회화 표현으로 매료시키는 Kanevsky의 작품이 일본 관객에게 처음 소개되는 귀중한 기회입니다. 104GALERIE 측에서 여러 차례 오퍼를 넣은 끝에 마침내 실현된 출품이라고 합니다.

Kanevsky의 대표 시리즈 중 하나인 nude painting.
복잡하게 얽힌 화면의 결이 인상적인 작품이었습니다.
8호 정도의 소품이므로, 실제로 눈으로 직접 확인해 보시기를 권합니다.

사전에 상상했던 것보다 얇게 칠한 필촉이었습니다.
단 두 점에 불과했지만, 처음 접한 Kanevsky의 작품에 완전히 매료되었습니다.
갤러리 디렉터로부터 앞으로 개인전을 개최하고 싶다는 이야기를 들었습니다.
그날을 기대하며 기다리고 싶습니다.
