I visited Tatsuo Miyajima’s solo exhibition “Uncertain.” The venue was SCAI THE BATHHOUSE.
SCAI THE BATHHOUSE (Yanaka)
Through the blinking of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) counting between 1 and 9, Tatsuo Miyajima has long expressed the complex relationships between life, death, and everything surrounding them. The title of this exhibition, “Uncertain,” recalls the uncertainty principle formulated by the German theoretical physicist Heisenberg.
Influenced by quantum mechanics, Miyajima came to believe that it is impossible for human beings to truly predict things, and that events always unfold according to chance — a worldview succinctly captured in this show.
Painting of Change
“Painting of Change,” Miyajima’s first-ever painting series, features digital numerals from “1 to 9” rendered on the walls in seven-segment displays.

Five works of varying sizes are arranged in the gallery, along with a specially made polyhedral die that is rolled at predetermined intervals.

Depending on the die’s result, segments of “Painting of Change” are removed or replaced, altering the numerals on the wall. Segments not in use are arranged neatly on the floor.

Unstable Time
Another series comprising this exhibition is “Unstable Time.”
LED numerals stitched onto white fabric in a variety of forms — spirals, circles, straight lines — blink on and off, each to its own rhythm.
Using fabric, a soft material that can take any shape, the work is said to change form in various ways throughout the exhibition period.

SCAI THE BATHHOUSE (야나카)
1과 9 사이를 오가는 발광다이오드(LED)의 명멸을 통해, 삶과 죽음, 그리고 그 주변과의 복잡한 관계성을 표현해 온 Tatsuo Miyajima. 이번 전시 「Uncertain」은 독일 이론물리학자 Heisenberg(하이젠베르크)의 불확정성 원리를 떠올리게 하는 제목입니다.
양자역학의 영향을 받으며, 인간에게 사물을 진정으로 예측하는 일은 불가능하며 그 전개는 언제나 우연에 맡겨져 있다고 여기게 된 Tatsuo Miyajima의 세계관을 함축적으로 나타내고 있습니다.
Painting of Change
Tatsuo Miyajima에게 있어 최초의 회화 시리즈인 《Painting of Change》는, “1~9″의 디지털 숫자를 7개로 분할된 세그먼트로 벽면에 표현한 작품입니다.

크고 작은 5개의 시리즈가 나란히 놓인 전시실 내에는 특제 다면체 주사위가 하나 놓여 있으며, 미리 정해진 주기에 따라 주사위가 굴려집니다.

《Painting of Change》는 나온 눈에 따라 세그먼트를 떼어내거나 다시 붙여, 벽면의 숫자를 변화시켜 가는 작품입니다. 사용되지 않는 세그먼트는 바닥에 가지런히 놓여 있습니다.

Unstable Time
이번 전시를 구성하는 또 하나의 시리즈 작품이 《Unstable Time》입니다.
나선, 원, 직선 — 다양한 형태로 흰 천에 꿰매어진 LED 숫자들이 저마다의 리듬으로 명멸을 반복하고 있습니다.
부드럽고 어떤 형태로든 변할 수 있는 천이라는 소재를 사용하여, 회기 중에 다양한 모습으로 변화한다고 합니다.
