We visited Ayako Rokkaku’s (rokkakuayako) solo exhibition “Magic Hand.” The venue is Chiba Prefectural Museum of Art.

Ayako Rokkaku is based in Portugal, but after returning to Japan in February 2020, she has continued her practice domestically throughout the COVID pandemic.
She is highly regarded in the contemporary art field, and her works command high prices on the secondary market such as auctions. On the same day this solo show opened, one of her works fetched roughly 25 million yen at SBI Art Auction.
Amid this surging market, the fact that Chiba Prefectural Museum of Art — a domestic public museum — is presenting a solo exhibition of her work is arguably a hugely significant undertaking for the contemporary art world. Combined with the very affordable admission of 300 yen, this is a wonderful opportunity to casually enjoy a contemporary artist’s exhibition.

Works on view and highlights
(1) A monumental 7m × 5.5m work, and a wealth of new pieces
This exhibition centers on the most recent works produced in 2020, with an emphasis on previously unpublished pieces.
A total of 160 two-dimensional and three-dimensional works are gathered here. Especially eye-catching is the monumental piece Magic Hand, created during a residency at Chiba Prefectural Museum of Art in October 2020.
The War of the Worlds series, lined up along the wall, is a standout in the show.
Preliminary drawings are transferred onto custom shaped canvases, on which cloud-like billows, round rolling shapes, and pointed forms take shape — girls board spacecraft of various shapes and drift through outer space. The series comprises roughly 30 works.

(3) Flower vases
The single-stem ash-wood vases in various forms are by SeeSee, a brand of the traditional craft “Shizuoka Hikimono” (turned woodware) — works that fuse traditional technique with fresh, contemporary sensibilities. Around 60 pieces of various sizes are gathered at the center of the exhibition hall.
Another highlight is the woodblock prints produced in collaboration with the Adachi Institute of Woodcut Prints.
The Adachi Institute inherits Edo-period ukiyo-e techniques and has collaborated with numerous contemporary artists — Yayoi Kusama and Izumi Kato among them — in pursuit of “contemporary ukiyo-e.” The display method was designed to make the production process easy to understand. The saturated color, achieved through repeated impressions, gave a striking sense of depth.

Ayako Rokkaku’s message from the interview granted at the moment the museum opened on the first day left us feeling that further leaps forward lie ahead.
Ayako Rokkaku: “At the Dutch museum the show was framed as a 10-year survey, so I wanted this one to take a different shape. Given the chance to do what I want to do right now, I ended up packing in a lot of new things (laughs). I feel I’ve done what I can do at this moment, and I sense that this show could be a starting point for many more things to come.”
Her message conveyed a strong, dependable creative attitude, unswayed by market movements.

시장이 뜨겁게 달아오르는 가운데, Chiba Prefectural Museum of Art라는 국내 공립 미술관이 개인전 형식으로 전시를 개최하기에 이른 것은 현대미술계에 있어 대단히 큰 의미를 지니는 기획이라 할 수 있겠지요. 입장료 300엔이라는 저렴한 가격 설정과 더불어, 현대미술 작가의 전시를 부담 없이 즐길 수 있는 좋은 기회입니다.

전시 작품과 볼거리
(1) 폭 7m × 높이 5.5m의 대작, 다수의 신작
이번 전시에서는 미발표 작품을 중심으로 2020년에 제작된 최신작이 주로 전시되어 있습니다.
평면 · 입체 작품 총 160점이 모였으며, 특히 시선을 끄는 대작 《Magic Hand》는 2020년 10월 Chiba Prefectural Museum of Art에서 레지던시로 제작된 것입니다.
벽면에 즐비하게 늘어선 《War of the Worlds》 시리즈는 주목할 만한 작품이었습니다.
밑그림으로 그려진 드로잉이 특별 주문 제작된 셰이프드 캔버스 위에 그려지고, 뭉게뭉게 구름 같은 형태, 데굴데굴 둥근 형태, 뾰족한 형태 — 소녀들은 다양한 형태의 우주선을 타고 우주 공간을 부유합니다. 약 30점으로 구성된 시리즈 작품입니다.

(3) 플라워 베이스
다양한 형태로 만들어진 물푸레나무 재질의 일륜화 화병은, 전통 공예 〈Shizuoka Hikimono(시즈오카 히키모노)〉 브랜드 SeeSee가 만든 것으로, 전통 기법을 살리면서도 신선하고 현대적인 발상이 융합된 작품입니다. 크기가 다양한 약 60점이 전시장 중앙에 모여 있습니다.

(4) 목판화 작품
Adachi Institute of Woodcut Prints와의 협업으로 제작된 목판화 작품 또한 관람 포인트 중 하나입니다.
Adachi Institute of Woodcut Prints는 에도 시대 우키요에의 기술을 계승하면서, Yayoi Kusama와 Izumi Kato를 비롯한 많은 현대 미술가들과 협업하며 “현대의 우키요에”를 추구하고 있습니다. 전시 방식은 제작 과정을 알기 쉽게 보여주는 형태였습니다. 여러 번 겹쳐 찍은 공정에서 비롯된 깊이감 있는 발색이 인상적이었습니다.

넓은 미술관 공간을 마음껏 활용하며, 목판화와 변형 캔버스, 플라워 베이스, 초대형 작품 등 새로운 시도를 엮어 훌륭한 공간으로 완성되어 있었습니다.

첫날 개관 시점에 인터뷰에 응해 주신 Ayako Rokkaku의 메시지에서는 앞으로의 한층 더 큰 도약이 느껴졌습니다.
Ayako Rokkaku: “네덜란드 미술관에서는 10년간의 작품전이라는 형식이었기 때문에, 저 자신은 그와는 다른 형태로 하고 싶었습니다. 지금 제가 해 보고 싶은 일을 할 수 있는 기회를 얻어, 새로운 것들을 잔뜩 담아 버렸어요(웃음). 지금 할 수 있는 것을 했다고 생각하지만, 이곳을 출발점 삼아 앞으로도 다양한 것을 할 수 있겠구나 싶습니다.”
