For certain reasons, some time after I’d begun living alone, I became aware of the picture rail in my sterile, brand-new apartment ringed by pure-white walls.
I hadn’t had the slightest idea of hanging anything on it, yet that night, for some reason, the thought crossed my mind: “Maybe I could put up a painting or a photo…”
Now I know you can buy art at a gallery, but for me — who’d had nothing to do with art until then — I had no idea where to buy a picture. Believing the answer to anything is on the internet, before I knew it I was typing into the search box, hunting for a picture to hang on my rail.
What I finally reached was an online shop an artist had built themselves. The artist’s profile, the concept, my impression of the work, the price, my sixth sense — all of it mobilized as I pressed the buy button.
The Cell Artist Ouma
The work I bought is by the cell artist “Ouma.”
Though Japanese, Ouma is an artist who moves through artist-in-residence programs abroad, actively working while shifting her base and the places she shows her work. And, as in the article below, she has also held exhibitions in Tokyo.
You might wonder why she works on the theme of cells — apparently Ouma’s previous job was as a veterinarian. To fulfill the essence of a vet’s work, “healing the heart,” she is said to have begun making art, seeking possibilities not reliant on surgery or medicine.
At the time I resolved to buy art, I was also going through a period of emotional wounds, and I resonated with the work’s concept, making it my first collection piece. *More on this later.
Online Shopping
When I bought it, it was sold on a platform called BASE, but Ouma now seems to sell in several places, including ArtSticker and TAGBOAT.
Ouma keeps a diary on Facebook, note, and elsewhere; back when I bought, she was sending out news from Finland. While searching, I stumbled onto an announcement of a sale and “clicked” the buy button.
One reason I bought was the very low price: ¥2,500 per work, shipping included.The envelope the works came in — it had been dropped into my mailbox.Even though it was shipped from far-off Finland, it arrived in less than a week.
Unpacking
When I opened the envelope, what had been used in place of backing board was a desk calendar for “2018,” the year after my purchase. It depicts the clock tower of a town in Romania called Sighișoara. Romania, I’m told, was her base before Finland.

The Works
The title of the piece I bought is “Slipper Animalcule – 3rd generation.”
The conceit: a third-generation paramecium that the country-hopping Ouma made in Turku, Finland, and, in Sighișoara, Romania, “treated” — and the following work description was written:
A work in which poorly made parts are excised as lesions and, as if transplanted, stitched together with other living parts. Please enjoy its ever-shifting, amorphous form.
As that description says, the work I bought is several works stitched together.
When I received it, I was amazed at how finely it was made.
Looking closely at the real thing, the works are sewn together with something like fine, transparent fishing line, invisible in the sales-page photos.
When I later asked the artist by message, she said she uses fishing line made to look like surgical thread. It really is a full-fledged “treatment” — realistic, meticulous craft on display. Five Things I Noticed After Buying
Let me organize what I actually noticed by actually buying.
(1) The Room Changes in an Instant
Once I displayed it in my room, the previously bare wall felt suddenly colored. A point for the eye to rest on appeared, giving the whole space a tighter impression and a welcome accent, and somehow it felt more comfortable.
And as I fixed my eyes on the work, I felt my imagination connecting with the outside world, my own inner world expanding.
(2) You Can Get It Surprisingly Cheaply
The prices of art run from top to bottom. Look up and famous works change hands at sky-high sums — Van Gogh’s “Sunflowers” in the bubble era, or a recent “Basquiat” at ¥12.3 billion. But this work was priced at ¥2,500 including overseas shipping. The frame isn’t included, so the total climbs a bit, but I hadn’t known you could buy so cheaply. *It has since gone up in price.
(3) You Get a Handwritten Message from the Artist
Along with the work came a postcard of a clock tower in Poland. On its back was a handwritten message from Ouma. In beautiful, careful handwriting, it was a heartwarming message.
What’s more, an exchange grew online, expanding into a chatting relationship. I hadn’t expected to communicate directly with the artist, so being able to share my impressions and words of thanks was an unexpected turn that surprised me.A handwritten message from Ouma
(4) Choosing a Frame Is Fun
What I agonized over was choosing the frame (art frame). If the work and frame don’t suit each other, how the work itself looks changes, and its presence in the room should shift greatly too.
I think a work’s presence, mood, aura, and power largely come down to the instant, at-a-glance impression, and in that, I felt a frame’s presence has an enormous influence — because the impact of that first glance is decisive.
A frame involves a compound of elements — color, material, size, ornamentation. Seeing them in a shop only adds to the confusion, so take care. (5) It’s Really, Really Happy-Making
And the fifth and final one: “It’s so delightful — it makes you Happy!” That’s it.
An artwork is basically one of a kind. The fact that there’s only one in the world made me feel as though it were “a work made just for me,” and I felt truly happy.
Also, through the act of owning an artwork, I felt I could recognize my own identity and reaffirm my values.
In Summary
There are all sorts of reasons people first buy art, but the above is the episode surrounding my first collection piece.
A complete novice in understanding art, I’ve put into words what I actually thought and felt. Personally, unexpectedly, I was glad I bought it — I ended up feeling that way, and I’m satisfied.
After the work arrived and I displayed it in my room, unexpected feelings arose — “I want to understand art more,” “I want to own more art.” From there, all at once, I began visiting galleries more often as an art collector…I mounted it with a product called “Kabibijin” that leaves no marks on the wall.Won’t you try collecting art, too?

어떤 이유로, 혼자 살기 시작해 얼마간 지났을 무렵, 새하얀 벽으로 둘러싸인 무미건조한 신축 맨션 방 안에서 픽처 레일이 있다는 것에 생각이 미쳤습니다.
픽처 레일에 무언가를 걸겠다는 생각은 조금도 없었는데, 그날 밤은 왠지 「그림이나 사진을 걸어 봐도 괜찮을까…」라는 생각이 들었습니다.
지금이야 「아트 작품은 갤러리에서 살 수 있다」는 걸 알지만, 그때까지 아트와 인연이 없던 저는 어디서 그림을 사야 할지 전혀 몰랐습니다. 무엇이든 답은 인터넷에 있다고 믿는 저는 어느새 검색창에 무언가를 입력해, 픽처 레일에 걸 그림을 찾기 시작했습니다.
최종적으로 다다른 것은 어느 작가가 직접 만든 온라인 숍이었습니다. 작가의 프로필과 제작 콘셉트, 작품의 인상, 가격, 육감 등이 총동원되어 구입 버튼을 누르고 있었습니다.
세포 아티스트 Ouma
제가 구입한 작품은 세포 아티스트 「Ouma」
Ouma는 일본인이면서도 해외 아티스트 인 레지던스를 전전하는 아티스트로, 제작 거점과 작품 발표 장소를 옮겨 가며 적극적으로 활동하는 여성 작가입니다. 물론 아래 기사처럼 도쿄에서의 전시 실적도 있습니다.
왜 세포를 주제로 활동하는지 의문이 들지만, Ouma의 전 직업은 수의사였다고 합니다. 수의사 일의 본질인 「마음의 치유」를 다하기 위해, 수술이나 약에 의존하지 않는 가능성을 모색하고자 아트 활동을 시작했다고 합니다.
아트 작품 구입을 결심했던 당시의 저는 마음에 상처를 입고 있던 시기이기도 해, 작품의 콘셉트에 공감해 첫 컬렉션 작품으로 삼았습니다. ※뒤에서 이야기합니다.
온라인 쇼핑
제가 구입할 당시에는 BASE라는 플랫폼에서 판매되고 있었지만, 현재 Ouma는 ArtSticker, TAGBOAT 등을 포함해 여러 곳에서 판매하고 있는 듯합니다.
Ouma는 현재 페이스북과 note 등에 일기를 계속 쓰고 있는 분으로, 제가 구입할 당시에는 핀란드에서 정보를 발신하고 있었습니다. 검색하던 중 작품 판매 공지에 다다라 「클릭」하고 구입 버튼을 눌렀습니다.
구입 가격이 배송비 포함 1작품 「2,500엔」이라는 매우 저렴한 금액이었던 것도 구입 이유 중 하나였습니다.작품이 들어 있던 봉투～우편함에 투함되어 있었습니다.먼 이국 핀란드에서의 발송이었지만 일주일도 안 되어 도착했습니다.
개봉
봉투를 열자, 대지 대신 사용된 것이 구입 연도 이듬해 「2018년」 탁상 달력이었습니다. 루마니아 시기쇼아라라는 도시의 시계탑이 그려진 것입니다. 루마니아는 핀란드 이전에 활동 거점으로 삼았던 곳이라고 합니다.
그때그때 손에 들어온 것을 함께 보내는 경우가 있다고 하며(보내지 않을 때도 있음), 구매자에게 주는 선물입니다.동봉되어 있던 루마니아 달력달력을 펼쳐 보니, 이번에 구입한 2작품이 모두 정성스럽게 포장되어 들어 있었습니다.작품은 2점 구입했습니다
작품
제가 구입한 작품의 제목은 「짚신벌레 – 제3세대／Slipper Animalcule -3rd generation」입니다.
이국을 떠도는 Ouma가 핀란드 투르쿠에서 제작하고, 루마니아 시기쇼아라에서 「치료」한 짚신벌레의 제3세대라는 설정으로, 아래와 같은 작품 설명이 적혀 있었습니다:
잘 만들어지지 않은 파츠를 병변부로서 절제하고, 이식하듯 살아 있는 다른 파츠와 꿰매어 붙인 작품입니다. 부정형으로 변화하는 형상을 즐겨 주세요.
위 설명대로, 이번에 구입한 작품은 여러 작품을 꿰매어 붙인 것입니다.
받아 보니 작품의 정교한 만듦새에 놀랐습니다.
실물을 잘 보면, 판매 페이지 사진에서는 보이지 않던 가늘고 투명한 낚싯줄 같은 것으로 작품끼리 꿰매어 붙여져 있습니다.

구입하고 나서 깨달은 5가지
실제로 구입함으로써 몸소 깨달은 것들을 정리해 보았습니다.
(1) 방이 확 달라진다
실제로 방에 걸어 보니, 지금까지 아무것도 없던 벽면이 단숨에 물든 느낌입니다. 방 안에 시선이 머무는 지점이 생겨 전체적으로 짜임새 있는 인상이 되고, 공간 속에서 확 눈길이 가는 포인트가 생겨 액센트가 되어, 왠지 더 편안해진 느낌이 들었습니다.
또한 작품에 시선을 쏟는 가운데, 제 상상력이 외부와 이어지는 감각도 있어 스스로의 내면세계가 넓어지는 듯했습니다.
(2) 의외로 저렴하게 손에 넣을 수 있다
아트 작품의 가격은 천차만별입니다. 위를 보면 버블기 고흐의 「해바라기」나 최근의 「바스키아」가 123억이라는 등, 저명한 작품이 고가로 얼마든지 유통되는 듯하지만, 이번 작품은 해외 배송비 포함 1작품 2,500엔이라는 가격 설정. 액자 가격은 포함되지 않아 금액은 조금 더 올라가지만, 이렇게 싸게 살 수 있는 줄은 몰랐습니다. ※현재는 가격이 올랐습니다.
(3) 작가에게 친필 메시지를 받을 수 있다
작품과 함께 폴란드에 있는 시계탑 엽서가 들어 있었습니다. 엽서 뒷면에는 Ouma의 친필 메시지가 남겨져 있었습니다. 예쁜 글씨로 정성껏 쓰인 문장으로, 마음이 따뜻해지는 메시지를 받았습니다.
게다가 인터넷상의 교류도 생겨나 채팅을 주고받는 관계로 넓어졌습니다. 직접 본인과 소통할 수 있으리라고는 생각지 못했기에, 작품 감상 등을 전하거나 감사의 말을 보낼 수 있어 예상 밖의 전개에 놀랐습니다.Ouma의 친필 메시지
(4) 액자 고르기가 즐겁다
고민한 것이 액자(아트 프레임) 고르기입니다. 작품과 액자의 궁합이 나쁘면 작품 자체의 보이는 방식도 달라질 것이고, 방 안에서의 존재감도 크게 달라질 것입니다.
작품에서 나오는 존재감, 분위기, 아우라, 작품력 등은 비교적 한눈에 보는 순간적인 감각으로 남는다고 생각하며, 거기에서 액자의 존재감은 매우 크게 영향을 미친다고 여겼습니다. 첫눈에 볼 때의 임팩트가 결정적으로 크게 작용하기 때문입니다.

(5) 정말 기쁘다
그리고 마지막 다섯 번째, 「무척 기쁘고, Happy해진다!」는 것입니다.
아트 작품은 기본적으로 단 하나뿐인 것입니다. 세상에 단 하나밖에 없다는 사실이 「나를 위해 만들어진 작품」처럼 느껴져, 무척 기뻤습니다.
또한 아트 작품을 소유한다는 행위를 통해, 스스로의 정체성을 인식하거나 가치관을 새삼 확인한 듯한 기분이 들었습니다.
정리
아트 작품을 처음 구입하는 계기는 다양하겠지만, 이상이 첫 컬렉션 작품에 얽힌 이야기입니다.
예술에 대한 이해가 완전히 초보인 제가 실제로 생각하고 느낀 것을 글로 적어 보았습니다. 개인적으로는 예상 밖으로 사길 잘했다고 생각할 수 있어 만족합니다.
