Olafur Eliasson “Sometimes the River Is the Bridge”
We visited Olafur Eliasson’s solo exhibition “Sometimes the River Is the Bridge.” The venue is the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo.

Born in 1967, Olafur Eliasson has been engaged since the early 1990s in a wide range of expressive practices, including photography, sculpture, drawing, installation, design, and architecture. His attempts to realize a sustainable world through art have earned him high international acclaim.
This exhibition is structured around Eliasson’s interest in renewable energy and his engagement with climate change.
Watercolors
The first works on view are three watercolors.

These works were created using ice from a glacier in Greenland. As the ice melts on the paper, the water mixes with pigment, spreading rich gradations and blurs across the surface. This process reflects Eliasson’s attitude of regarding natural phenomena — which occur independently of human will — as collaborators.
Memories of the Critical Zone
The next works are twelve circular drawings.
Many of the works exhibited here were transported not by carbon-intensive aircraft but by rail and ship from Berlin to Japan.

Drawn without human intervention by devices that record the motion and vibration of transport, the countless lines — impossible for the human hand to render — trace every event that befell the works during their journey.

In a gallery filled with a large yellow screen, there is nothing but a light placed on the floor.

But when someone passes in front of the light, multiple overlapping shadows are cast on the wall. “Things become visible only when you are moving,” Eliasson says. Taking action and effecting change may lead to new discoveries and ways of seeing.

Sometimes the River Is the Bridge
In contrast to the colorful works, the gallery for Sometimes the River Is the Bridge holds, in near darkness, a large shallow dish filled with water at its center, illuminated by twelve spotlights.

Eliasson sees the fluid situation of ripples — ever changing and gradually spreading — as an indispensable element for surpassing limits. Presenting a new way of engaging with the world, this piece is a new work created for the exhibition.
Sunlight Graffiti
In 2012, Eliasson co-developed the portable solar light “Little Sun” with engineer Frederik Ottesen.
Movement of Your Light is a video work recording the bodily expressions of a dancer holding a Little Sun and the trajectories of its light. In Sunlight Graffiti, participants holding a Little Sun draw freely in space with light.

Beyond Human Resonator
Beyond Human Resonator is a work in which light dispersed through a large glass ring paints concentric circles on the wall.

The work applies the mechanism by which a lighthouse casts bright light far across the dark sea, embodying a hallmark of Eliasson’s practice: eliciting great wonder in viewers through simple devices.

Light illuminates three slowly rotating circular glass panels, and multiple circles float upon the wall. The panels, of different sizes, are given a special coating that reflects light of a specific wavelength while transmitting its complementary color.
Before: Olafur Eliasson, Are You Afraid?, 2004Something appears on the wall only in the instant when circles of cyan, magenta, and yellow — all of the same size — overlap. The work was born of Eliasson’s exploration of color theory.
The Melting Glaciers Series 1999/2019

From his earliest work, Eliasson has documented Iceland’s natural features — glaciers, volcanoes, caves — in photographs. The 30-part work The Melting Glaciers Series 1999/2019 juxtaposes photographs taken from identical points in 1999 and 2019, making visible the retreat of glaciers over twenty years due to climate change.

This work documents nine projects Eliasson has undertaken in public spaces. Common to all of them is the way they bring awareness to people by making visible what is otherwise unseen.

Through this exhibition, my awareness of the problems facing the Earth we inhabit, and of our own relationship to them, was newly awakened.
Empathizing with the message Olafur Eliasson conveys through his works, this was an exhibition that left me with a strong sense of urgency about these issues.

이 작품은 그린란드 빙하의 얼음으로 제작되었습니다. 종이 위에서 녹아 가는 얼음의 물이 안료와 뒤섞이면서, 화면 전체에 풍부한 농담과 번짐이 퍼져 나갑니다. 이러한 제작 과정에는, 인간의 의지와는 무관하게 일어나는 자연 현상을 공동 제작의 상대로 여기는 Eliasson의 태도가 반영되어 있습니다.

커다란 노란색 스크린이 펼쳐진 전시실에는, 바닥에 놓인 조명 외에는 아무것도 없습니다.

하지만 누군가가 조명 앞을 가로지르면, 서로 겹쳐진 여러 개의 그림자가 벽에 드리워집니다. “당신이 움직이고 있을 때에만 사물이 보인다”고 Eliasson은 말합니다. 행동과 변화를 일으키는 것이 새로운 발견과 사물을 보는 방식으로 이어질지도 모릅니다.

《Sunlight Graffiti》
2012년, Eliasson은 휴대형 솔라 라이트 “Little Sun”을 엔지니어 Frederik Ottesen과 공동 개발했습니다.
《Movement of Your Light》는 Little Sun을 손에 든 댄서의 신체 표현과 그 빛의 궤적이 기록되는 영상 작품입니다. 《Sunlight Graffiti》에서는 Little Sun을 손에 든 체험자가 공간에 자유로이 빛의 드로잉을 그립니다.

《Beyond Human Resonator》는 커다란 유리 링에 의해 분광된 빛이 벽에 동심원의 회화를 그리고 있는 작품입니다.

이 작품에는 어두운 바다를 멀리까지 밝게 비추는 등대의 빛의 원리가 응용되어 있으며, 단순한 장치로 관람자에게 커다란 놀라움을 주는 Eliasson 작품의 특징이 잘 나타나 있습니다.
한 줄기의 빛이 크게 확장된 전시실의 모습.
천천히 회전하는 3장의 원형 유리판을 빛이 비추고, 벽에는 여러 개의 원이 떠오릅니다. 크기가 다른 유리판에는 특정 파장의 빛을 반사하고, 보색의 빛을 투과시키는 특수한 가공이 되어 있습니다.
