I visited Yutaka Aoki’s solo exhibition “INTO THE AIR.” The venue is KOSAKU KANECHIKA.
Installation view
On view was a series of small works painted with acrylics, spray, and aluminum. With their heightened sense of materiality, the works somehow call to mind Kenjiro Okazaki’s Zero Thumbnail series.
Perhaps the reason they strike me as different in character from Okazaki’s is that they push a metallic materiality to the fore. This series was reportedly created as an attempt to approach “light.”
I had seen Yutaka Aoki’s large works before, but I preferred the small pieces I encountered for the first time here. Even on a small canvas they hold plenty worth looking at — powerful works.
