The first Tokyo solo exhibition by Natsuko Tanihara, currently enrolled in the doctoral program at Kyoto City University of Arts, will be held at the Ebisu gallery MEM.
Natsuko Tanihara is a young artist known for receiving the Encouragement Prize at the VOCA Exhibition in 2016 and the Goto Memorial Cultural Award New Artist Prize in 2017.

Rather than using canvas, Tanihara’s works are painted in oil on black velvet stretched over panels. She uses distinctive materials such as sequins and glitter to stage her worldview.

Regarding the exhibition title “Matsurowanumono,” Tanihara explains: “Matsurowanumono refers to the peoples who fiercely resisted around the time the Yamato Court was being established. It means those who did not submit, those who did not obey.” She says that what she paints are the stories of these matsurowanumono.

Tanihara says the matsurowanumono are beings who can only exist in the dark paths and dark places of the world, and that it is her work to weave the narrative worlds of these beings through painting.

This solo exhibition will consist entirely of new works.
It will include the display of large-scale pieces, and the world of Natsuko Tanihara promises to greatly expand.

Natsuko Tanihara “복종하지 않는 자들”
Kyoto City University of Arts 미술연구박사과정에 재학 중인 Natsuko Tanihara의 도쿄 첫 개인전이 에비스의 갤러리 MEM에서 개최됩니다.
Natsuko Tanihara는 2016년 VOCA展에서 장려상을 수상하고, 2017년 고토 기념 문화상 신인상을 수상하는 등으로 알려진 젊은 작가입니다.
이번 전시 제목 “복종하지 않는 자들(마츠로와누모노)”에 대해 Tanihara는 “복종하지 않는 자들이란 야마토 조정이 성립하려던 시기에 격렬히 저항을 계속했던 민족을 말한다. 따르지 않는 자, 굴복하지 않는 자라는 뜻”이며, 자신이 그리는 것은 복종하지 않는 자들의 이야기라고 말합니다.
복종하지 않는 자들은 세상의 어두운 길, 어두운 장소에서만 존재할 수 있는 자들이며, 그들의 이야기 세계를 그림으로 엮어내는 것이 자신의 일이라고 Tanihara는 말합니다.
