We visited “Izumi Kato: LIKE A ROLLING SNOWBALL,” held at Hara Museum ARC (Shibukawa City, Gunma Prefecture).
This exhibition runs concurrently with an Izumi Kato exhibition of the same name opening on August 10 at Hara Museum (Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo). Featuring 145 works ranging from early to recent pieces, including unpublished works, it offers a comprehensive overview of the artist’s quarter-century of activity.

The venue is divided into four areas: the square “Gallery A” with its pyramidal roof, the elongated “Gallery B” and “Gallery C” that extend symmetrically on either wing, and the special exhibition room “Kankai-an.”

Gallery A
Gallery A, the main gallery with a 13-meter-high ceiling, was filled with large-scale wooden sculptures as its centerpiece, along with sculptures of various sizes made from soft vinyl and stone.
Visitors can weave their way between the various three-dimensional works to view them.
It was possible to enjoy the sculptures from any position or angle, all 360 degrees around.
You can get very close to these primal, mysterious sculptures, and photography from designated positions is also permitted.
As you weave through and view the exhibited works, you begin to feel as if you have become one with the pieces. It was a masterful presentation that lets you engage face-to-face with Izumi Kato’s compelling works.

Including a fabric installation, it was a truly overwhelming exhibition space.
Gallery B
Gallery B mainly showcases two-dimensional works.
The space where the triptych oil paintings from the Oketa Collection and the Kawasaki Collection stand facing each other was fascinating, and it was also fun to view an installation covered with small drawings and lithographs.
The special exhibition room “Kankai-an” is normally a space for viewing the antique art collection assembled by the museum’s chairman’s great-grandfather, Rokuro Hara.
This project displays antique works and Izumi Kato’s works together in the same room.
*Please note that Izumi Kato’s works are not shown from September 13 to October 23, as a special exhibition by Arata Isozaki will be held.
This space left the deepest impression on me personally.
The affinity between the antiques and Izumi Kato’s works was superb, and the dimly-set lighting created a sense of gravitas, resulting in a successful collaboration that transcends time.
I paid particular attention to a work made of small fishing lures. It was a charming piece, and I heard it had actually been used for fishing in a magazine feature. This felt very characteristic of Kato, who loves fishing, and left a very positive impression.
Summary
Though I couldn’t cover it all this time, the on-site cafe “Cafe d’Art” offers many related programs, such as collaboration desserts, lithograph sales and exhibitions, and screenings of soft vinyl doll production videos.

Hara Museum ARC may be located far from major metropolitan areas, but the excellence of its exhibition contents is truly remarkable.
This is a rare opportunity to see 145 Izumi Kato works all at once.
We highly recommend making the trip to the venue in person and immersing yourself in the energy that radiates from Izumi Kato’s works.

높이 13미터의 메인 갤러리 “Gallery A”에는 대표적인 대형 목조 조각 작품을 중심으로, 소프트 비닐이나 돌을 사용한 크고 작은 다양한 조각 작품이 늘어서 있었습니다.
관람객은 다양한 입체 작품 사이를 누비듯이 감상할 수 있습니다.
입체 작품을 360도 원하는 위치와 각도에서 즐길 수 있었습니다.
원시적이고 신비로운 조각 작품에 아주 가깝게 다가가 볼 수 있고, 지정된 위치에서의 사진 촬영도 가능합니다.
전시된 작품 사이를 누비듯 감상해 나가면, 자신도 작품과 하나가 된 듯한 감각이 느껴지기 시작합니다. Izumi Kato의 보는 이를 압도하는 작품과 지근거리에서 대면할 수 있는 최고의 연출이었습니다.

Gallery B
Gallery B는 평면 작품 위주의 전시입니다.
오케타 컬렉션과 가와사키 컬렉션의 삼련 유화 작품이 마주 보고 놓여 있는 공간이 흥미로웠고, 또한 소품 드로잉과 리소그래프가 빼곡히 걸린 전시도 즐겁게 감상할 수 있었습니다.
이 공간이 개인적으로 가장 인상 깊게 남았습니다.
고미술과 Izumi Kato의 작품 간 궁합이 훌륭했고, 조도를 낮춘 조명이 중후한 분위기를 만들어내며 시대를 초월한 콜라보레이션을 성공시키고 있었습니다.
낚시에 사용하는 작은 루어로 만든 작품에 주목했습니다. 사랑스러운 작품이었는데, 예전에 잡지 기획에서 실제로 낚시에 사용된 작품이라고 합니다. 낚시를 좋아하는 Izumi Kato다운 면모여서, 매우 좋은 인상을 받았습니다.

이번에 다 소개해 드리지 못했지만, 시설 내 카페 “Cafe d’Art”에서는 콜라보 스위츠 제공, 리소그래프의 전시 판매, 소프트 비닐 인형 제작 영상 소개 등, 전시와 관련된 여러 기획이 전개되고 있었습니다.
