I visited Hiroka Yamashita’s preview solo exhibition “Ephemerality.” The venue is THE CLUB, a gallery inside GINZA SIX.
THE CLUB
This exhibition was hastily organized after the cancellation of Art Fair Tokyo 2020. Because of the response to the coronavirus, the show was moved to an appointment-only format, which sadly limited its exposure to a wider public — but I was able to view a truly wonderful set of works.

Immediately after graduating from high school, Hiroka Yamashita moved to the United States, studied at an art school in New York, completed her master’s degree last year, and made her solo debut at the Berlin gallery Tanya Leighton.

Sanya Kantarovsky, an artist who is also represented by Tanya Leighton, is known to be a passionate admirer of her work.

Although only six works were on view, each was a large piece with real presence, making for a memorable occasion. Perhaps because of her long time abroad, her paintings evoke a sensibility associated with Western painters. The way she constructs her compositions, the mysterious presence of her subjects, and the translucent quality of the paint surface all left a lasting impression.
Hiroka Yamashita has since returned from abroad and is now working in Beppu. Tanya Leighton is also reportedly planning to present her work at Art Basel in Basel, making her a young artist to watch.

Hiroka Yamashita의 프리뷰 개인전 “Ephemerality”를 찾았다. 전시장은 GINZA SIX 내의 갤러리 THE CLUB이다.
THE CLUB
본 전시는 “Art Fair Tokyo 2020″의 개최가 취소되면서 급히 기획된 것이다. 코로나바이러스 대응 차원에서 예약제로 진행되어 폭넓은 관객이 감상할 수 없었던 점은 매우 아쉽지만, 훌륭한 작품들을 감상할 수 있었다.

Hiroka Yamashita는 고등학교 졸업 후 곧바로 미국으로 건너가 뉴욕의 아트 스쿨을 거쳐 지난해 석사 과정을 마쳤으며, 베를린의 갤러리 Tanya Leighton에서 개인전으로 데뷔했다.

같은 Tanya Leighton 소속 아티스트인 Sanya Kantarovsky도 그녀 작품의 열렬한 팬으로 알려져 있다.

단 6점의 작품에 불과했지만 모두가 대작이어서 볼거리가 가득한 자리였다. 오랫동안 해외에서 활동해 온 만큼, 서구 화가들에게서 볼 수 있는 화풍이 느껴졌다. 구도를 잡는 방식과 신비로운 분위기, 투명감 있는 화면 질감이 인상적이었다.
해외에서 돌아와 현재는 Beppu에서 계속 작업 중인 Hiroka Yamashita. Art Basel Basel에서도 Tanya Leighton으로부터의 출품이 예정되어 있는 듯하여, 기대되는 젊은 작가이다.
