I visited Aki Moriyama’s solo exhibition “image.” The venue is MEDEL GALLERY SHU.

Aki Moriyama, an artist who completed her studies at Tokyo University of the Arts this spring, has been producing paintings using dolls as motifs. Her most recent showing was her graduation exhibition, held about two months before this show.

This exhibition presents more than 20 new and existing works painted under the theme of “image.”

The painted doll interrogates the subjecthood of the “I.”
Using dolls, I express the “human drama” in painting. Dolls are very close to human beings.
And yet, they are ultimately not people, and neither male nor female. They are human-like yet objects.
Dolls have no movement. If anything, that makes them seem more expressive than humans.
They speak no lines. They have no facial expressions. That stimulates the viewer’s imagination and expands the image before their eyes.
To make a doll — an object — appear as if life dwells within, one must ask how strongly one can consciously imbue the painting with a sense of fantasy.
The reason I paint dolls is because I believe dolls can express what human gestures alone cannot.
By painting dolls, I want to raise fundamental questions about the ways in which humans exist — identity, consciousness, body, and so on.

By selecting iconic toys for girls such as Licca-chan and Barbie dolls as her motifs, Moriyama paints under themes centered on gender and human diversity. Through depicting dolls that persist across eras and national borders, her work leads to fundamental questions about the ways human beings exist.

본 전시에서는 “이미지”를 테마로 그려진 신작・기존작을 합쳐 20여 점이 전시됩니다.

그려진 돌이 “나”의 주체성을 묻는다.
돌을 사용해 “인간극”을 회화로 표현한다. 돌은 인간에게 매우 친근한 존재다.
그러나 결국 인간도 아니고, 남자도 여자도 아니다. 그것은 인간이면서도 물질이다.
돌에는 움직임이 없다. 오히려 그것이 인간보다 표정 풍부하게 느껴지게 한다.
대사도 말하지 않는다. 표정도 없다. 그것이 보는 이의 상상력을 자극하고, 눈앞의 이미지를 부풀어 오르게 한다.
물체인 돌에 생명이 깃든 것처럼 보이게 하기 위해서는, 얼마나 판타지성을 강하게 의식하여 그릴 수 있는가에 달려 있다.
내가 돌을 그리는 것은, 인간의 몸짓만으로는 표현할 수 없는 것을 돌로는 표현할 수 있다고 생각하기 때문이다.
돌들을 그리는 것으로, 인간 자신의 정체성・의식・신체 등 인간 존재의 방식에 대한 근원적인 문제 제기를 하고자 한다.

Licca-chan이나 Barbie 인형과 같은 상징적인 여아용 완구를 모티프로 선택함으로써, 젠더나 인간의 다양성에 대한 자각을 테마로 그리고 있습니다. 시대와 국경을 넘어 계속 존재하는 인형을 그리는 것을 통해, 인간 존재의 방식에 대한 근원적인 문제 제기로 이어져 갑니다.
