I visited the joint exhibition by Atsuko Yamashita and Reina Mikame. The venue is TAKU SOMETANI GALLERY.

The project came about because the two artists had attended the same prep school in Nagoya, and their long-standing friendship made this exhibition possible. Collaborations are common in the music world, but joint projects in painting are quite rare. This is a challenging endeavor that crosses the boundaries of each artist’s representing gallery.

For the collaborative works, one of the two artists would begin, and the two then exchanged the pieces back and forth as they worked on them. Some works were completed after just a single exchange, while others traveled between the two many times before reaching completion.
Exhibited work
Two versions of the exhibition’s direct-mail flyer (DM) were produced this time.
Each artist had a different preference, so they ended up creating two versions.
The two artists’ styles overlap and interweave, as though a different life were being breathed into each single work.
As a method, joint painting may not easily take root as an established practice, but these collaborative works, into which the energy of two young painters has been poured, were wonderful to see.
이 기획은 두 사람이 나고야에서 같은 미대 입시학원(예비교)에 다녔던 인연이 계기가 되어, 평소부터 친밀하게 교류해 온 관계를 바탕으로 실현되었습니다. 음악의 세계에서는 콜라보 기획이 흔하지만, 회화의 세계에서 두 작가가 함께 그리는 합작 기획은 상당히 드문 일입니다. 소속 갤러리의 벽을 넘어선, 도전적인 기획이라 할 수 있습니다.
전시 전경
합작 작품은 두 사람 중 한 명이 먼저 작업을 시작하고, 서로 작품을 주고받으며 번갈아 진행했다고 합니다. 단 한 번의 왕복만으로 완성된 작품도 있는가 하면, 두 사람 사이를 몇 번이고 오가며 층층이 쌓여 완성된 작품도 있다고 합니다.
전시 작품
이번에 제작된 DM(홍보용 엽서)은 두 종류였습니다.
각자의 의견이 달라, 두 가지 버전을 만들게 되었다고 합니다.

각자의 화풍이 서로 겹쳐지면서, 하나의 작품에 서로 다른 두 생명이 불어넣어진 듯한 인상을 받았습니다.
회화의 합작이라는 스타일은 하나의 방법론으로서 자리 잡기가 쉽지 않을지도 모르지만, 두 젊은 화가의 에너지가 응축된 이번 합작 작품들은 무척이나 근사했습니다.
