The annual season of “Cool Invitations” has arrived again.
Pushed aside by the wave of digitalization, receiving invitations on paper has become an old-fashioned notion, yet the function of sending an invitation still lives on, even in email form.
We would be delighted if visitors to this exhibition, upon seeing the collection of invitations on display, could recall various past exhibitions. In such a moment, the paper invitation takes on a role as part of the exhibition itself.
For participants in this now-established exhibition, we asked them to conceive purely imaginary invitations. Whether impossible or possible – simple dream invitations – anyone involved in art can dream up these “invitations to imaginary exhibitions.”
“Cool Invitations” is a benefit exhibition held to support the ongoing activities of XYZ Collective. Invitation cards created as artworks by artists are offered for sale.
In Japan, it is extraordinarily difficult for artist-run spaces like XYZ Collective, which are not commercial galleries, to sustain their activities. Through this benefit exhibition, we support their international efforts. XYZ Collective also plays the role of introducing Japanese artists to international projects.
Every work is sold at the flat price of 40,000 yen, with the proceeds going toward the operating funds of XYZ Collective.
Such initiatives are said to be quite common in Europe and America.
In Japan, the diversification of venues where art can be shown still seems to remain at a low level.
Regarding initiatives such as this exhibition, we hope to actively consider what we, as collectors, can do.
매년 정기적으로 열리는 “Cool Invitations”의 계절이 돌아왔습니다.
디지털화의 물결에 밀려 초대장이 종이로 도착하는 것은 구식이 된 시대이지만, 초대장을 보낸다는 기능은 이메일이 되어서도 여전히 남아 있습니다.
본 전시를 찾은 분들이 컬렉션된 초대장을 보며 다양한 과거의 전시회를 떠올려 주신다면 기쁘겠습니다. 그때 종이 초대장은 전시회의 일부 역할을 다하고 있는 셈이 되기 때문입니다.
이제 관례가 된 이 전시의 참가자들에게, 완전히 상상 속의 초대장을 구상해 달라고 요청했습니다. 불가능하기도 하고 가능하기도 한 전시회, 단순한 꿈의 초대장, 이러한 “상상의 전시회 초대장”은 예술에 관련된 사람이라면 누구나 떠올릴 수 있습니다.
“Cool Invitations”전은 XYZ Collective의 활동 번영을 위해 열리는 자선(benefit) 전시회입니다. 아티스트가 손수 만든 작품으로서의 초대장을 판매합니다.
일본에서는 커머셜 갤러리가 아닌 XYZ Collective와 같은 아티스트 런 스페이스가 활동을 이어가는 것은 매우 어려운 과제입니다. 이 자선 전시를 통해 국제적인 활약을 지원하는 시도입니다. 언제나 일본의 아티스트를 국제 프로젝트에 초빙하는 역할도 담당하고 있습니다.
모든 작품은 일률적으로 4만 엔에 판매되며, 수익은 XYZ Collective의 운영 자금으로 사용되는 구조입니다.
이러한 시도는 유럽과 미국에서는 일반적이 되어 있다고 합니다.
일본에서 아트를 발표할 수 있는 장소의 다양화는 아직 낮은 수준에 머물러 있는 것으로 보입니다.
본 전시와 같은 시도에 대해, 컬렉터 측에서 할 수 있는 일이 있다면 적극적으로 검토해 나가고자 합니다.
