We visited Josh Sperling’s solo exhibition “Summertime.” The venue was the Roppongi gallery PERROTIN TOKYO.
This is Josh Sperling’s first solo exhibition in Japan.

Josh Sperling is said to be an artist who tailors his production to the exhibition venue. The works, with their unusual curved forms, are canvases built on individually crafted wooden stretchers.
Moreover, the paint colors applied to these irregularly shaped canvases are all different across the venue.
As the exhibition title “Summertime” suggests, the paints used feature summery colors that seem to bring a cool respite to Tokyo’s hot and humid summer.
In another room, a different series of works was on display.
These works may look like faces, but they are not painted on a single canvas – rather, they are constructed from combinations of smaller canvases.
Furthermore, although each work is finished in a different shape, the sizes and shapes of the canvases used within each piece are all identical.Indeed, once you compare them, you notice it. It felt like a pleasant trompe l’oeil.
He is a popular artist and it seems his works are difficult to acquire.
Born in 1984 and now 35, we look forward to his continued success!
さらに、変形キャンバスに塗られた絵の具の色は、会場内全て違う色で描かれています。
「Summertime」という展示タイトルが示すように、使われている絵の具は夏らしい色彩で、蒸し暑い東京の夏を涼しくしてくれそうです。
確かに、見比べると気がつきます。心地良い、だまし絵のように感じました。
人気の作家さんで作品はなかなか手に入らないようです。
