I visited Masato Kobayashi’s first solo exhibition in three years, “Artist and the Model.” The venue is ShugoArts, a gallery in Roppongi.
I had just finished reading his recently published book “The Paints of This Planet,” so my interest in Masato Kobayashi was at its peak — I had been looking forward to this show very much.

Entering the gallery, the large-scale work “Model of this planet” greets you head-on.
It depicts a nude model lying on her stomach with a bullet fired into her back.

You cannot help but imagine the model, defenseless in the studio during the making of the piece.
Who fired the bullet into her back? Why did they pull the trigger?
As we picture that scenario, we start imagining the meaning of the work in front of us.

Numerous well-worn, paint-smeared cloths were placed around the piece.
The scattered cloths reminded me of used tissue paper…

Moving into the gallery’s back room, another major work, “Portrait of the artist,” stands with a towering presence.
As the title suggests, the figure holding a brush in his mouth must be Masato Kobayashi himself.
The slender build resembles Masato’s own, dominating the entire gallery space.

Masato Kobayashi refers to the world as “this planet.”
In the gallery space, works that sparkle like stars are shown in vivid, intense color.
The works pictured below are a series drawn with markers on well-worn paper.
As their motif, Masato Kobayashi replaces himself with a horse, drawn together with the model.

Opening Talk
At the opening talk session with guest Kazu Oshiro, we heard a fascinating conversation centered around “space and frame.”
Masato Kobayashi’s words — intuitive and charged with the primal energy that human beings carry inside — gave many hints and insights to an ordinary person like myself, bound as I am by preconceptions and rules.

I’d like to summarize what was discussed in the opening talk in another post soon.
What left a strong impression on me was Tomio Koyama of Tomio Koyama Gallery, on the same floor, walking back and forth again and again with a smile on his face to check on the opening.
Being able to encounter Masato Kobayashi’s raw, unfiltered talent made it a deeply satisfying day.

최근 출간된 서적 “이 별의 물감”을 읽고 Masato Kobayashi에 대한 관심이 고조되던 시점이라, 매우 기대하고 있었습니다.
건물 창가에 장식된 작품 — 갤러리가 입주한 건물 complex665로 가는 길에서 보이는 위치에 설치
입구로 들어서면 정면에 전시되어 있는 것이 대작 《이 별의 모델 Model of this planet》.
가로누운 누드 모델의 등에 총알이 박히는 장면을 그린 작품입니다.

등에 총알을 발사한 자는 누구인가? 발포한 이유는?
관람객은 그 상황을 상상하며 눈앞에 존재하는 작품의 의미를 상상하게 됩니다.

작품 주위에는 오래 사용해 물감이 잔뜩 묻은 천이 여러 장 놓여 있었습니다.
그 천들은 사용된 티슈를 연상시켰습니다⋯.

갤러리의 후실로 들어가면 또 하나의 대작 《화가의 초상》이 솟구치듯 강력한 존재감으로 전시되어 있습니다.
제목대로 붓을 물고 있는 인물은 Masato Kobayashi 본인일 것입니다.
훤칠한 체구는 Masato 본인 그대로이며, 갤러리 전체를 손안에 넣은 듯한 존재감입니다.

Kazu Oshiro를 초대한 오프닝 토크 세션에서는 “공간과 프레임”을 중심으로 흥미로운 이야기를 들을 수 있었습니다.
Masato Kobayashi의 직관적이며 인간의 근원적인 에너지를 담은 언어는, 기성 관념과 규칙에 얽매여 있는 필자 같은 일반인에게 많은 시사점을 주었습니다.

오프닝 토크에서 나눈 이야기의 내용은 언젠가 따로 정리하고자 합니다.
같은 층의 갤러리 Tomio Koyama Gallery의 Tomio Koyama 씨가 미소 지으며 오프닝 모습을 보러 몇 번이나 왕복하시던 모습이 매우 인상적이었습니다.
Masato Kobayashi의 있는 그대로의 재능을 접할 수 있어, 만족도 높은 하루였습니다.
