I visited Ai Ohkawara’s solo exhibition “On the Means of Turning the Silence That Lingers on the Eardrum into Gentleness.”
The venue is the Art Gallery on the 10th floor of Shinjuku Takashimaya.

Approximately 30 works were on view at the exhibition.
Because the Shinjuku Takashimaya Art Gallery is a spacious venue, the artist has to prepare a large number of works, which must be quite demanding.

Using a variety of materials and techniques, she showed a broad range of works, though the show was centered on her oil paintings.
She treats art as an “apparatus that stimulates vision” in order to expose the dark, unstable parts of the human psyche, and she continues to produce work along those lines.
There were also canvas works, but these particular pieces are made on board with paper affixed to it, prepared with a technique called “emulsion ground.”
“Between Mirrors 3” — inside the acrylic frame, one can see fine transparent objects expressing “threads of the heart.”
“Emulsion ground,” a technique also used by Western Renaissance painters, is a method of applying animal glue to strengthen the ground. It is a highly meticulous process.
Ai Ohkawara names Jenny Saville and Francis Bacon as her favorite artists, and one can sense their influence in her work.

The collage works, made with beeswax, charcoal, and paint, were also fascinating.
Their reasonable prices made it easy to understand why the series is so popular.

With a touch that oscillates between delicacy and boldness, moving across oil painting, drawing, and collage, this was a solo exhibition that showed the artist’s broad range.
I hear that she participates at Art Fair Tokyo every year with NODA CONTEMPORARY.
An artist whose future is very much worth watching.

「乳化底料」是文艺复兴时期西方画家也曾采用的技法，据说是通过涂抹胶料以提高强度的一种手法。是极为考究的作品。
Ai Ohkawara 说自己喜欢的艺术家是 Jenny Saville 和 Francis Bacon。作品中也能感受到这样的影响。

Ai Ohkawara의 개인전 「고막에 남은 정적을 다정함으로 바꾸는 방법에 대하여」를 방문했습니다.
장소는 Shinjuku Takashimaya 10층에 있는 Art Gallery입니다.

Shinjuku Takashimaya의 Art Gallery는 넓은 공간이기 때문에, 작가는 많은 작품을 준비해야 하며 상당히 힘든 일일 것입니다.

다양한 소재와 표현 방식을 구사해 폭넓은 작품을 선보였지만, 전시 구성은 유화를 중심으로 짜여 있습니다.
인간 정신의 어두운 부분과 불안정성을 드러내기 위해 미술을 「시각을 자극하는 장치」로 파악하고, 작품 제작을 이어 가고 있다고 합니다.
캔버스 작품도 있었지만, 이 작품들은 보드에 종이를 붙이고 「에멀전 바탕」이라는 기법으로 밑작업을 한 작품입니다.
《Between Mirrors 3》 ― 아크릴 액자 내부에는 「마음의 실」을 표현한 투명색의 가느다란 조형물이 보였습니다.
르네상스 시대의 서양 화가들도 사용했던 기법인 「에멀전 바탕」은 아교를 발라 강도를 높이는 기법이라고 합니다. 대단히 손이 많이 가는 작품입니다.
좋아하는 작가로 Jenny Saville와 Francis Bacon을 꼽는 Ai Ohkawara. 작품에서도 그러한 영향을 느낄 수 있습니다.

앞으로의 활약이 기대되는 작가입니다.
