“Projects,” one of the segments lined up in the free-admission zone of Art Fair Tokyo 2019, functioned as a solo-show stage for up-and-coming young artists to watch, and it was thriving.
Among the 12 participating galleries, Shikisaisha presented “Water sources” by young sculptor Yu Seto.

All the works on show are animal sculptures — 11 pieces in total.
The material is unglazed terracotta with simple coloring. Distinctive is the use of “gyokugan” (inlaid crystal eyes), which lends a lifelike reality.

The animals in this show are said to be based on species that inhabit Africa.
When we spoke with Yu Seto, he told us that alongside the animals as visual subjects, he places importance on “a viewpoint that starts from a biological approach.”
More than just conveying each animal’s primal reality, these sculptures carry the bearing of portraits — as if delivering the presence of animals in the wild all the way to where we stand.

The animal skin surfaces created in terracotta have a wonderful tactile quality — the texture is superb (we were actually allowed to touch them).
Meeting Yu Seto himself, with his mild manner, we could feel even more strongly the vital force emanating from these animals.
The works were highly popular with the visitors flowing past, and nearly all sold out.
Prices centered from the 80,000 yen range up to the 200,000 yen range — a kind price tag that comes with being a young artist.
His popularity looks set to rise, so getting one sooner rather than later seems wise.

It felt like a lovely space where a gentle artist and his children had gathered together.

참여한 12개 갤러리 가운데 하나인 갤러리 Shikisaisha가 기획한 것은 젊은 조각가 Yu Seto의 “Water sources”입니다.

이번에 출품된 작품은 모두 동물 조각이며 총 11점입니다.
소재는 유약을 입히지 않은 테라코타 소소성에 소박한 채색. 특징적인 것은 “옥안(玉眼)”을 넣어 생물로서의 리얼리티를 부여한 점입니다.

이번 전시에 출품된 동물들은 아프리카에 서식하는 동물들을 모티프로 삼았다고 합니다.
Yu Seto에게 이야기를 들어보니, 비주얼로서의 동물뿐만 아니라 “생물학적 접근에서 비롯된 시점”을 중요시한다고 합니다.
작품은 오가는 관람객들 사이에서 큰 인기를 얻어, 거의 완판 상태였습니다.
가격대는 8만 엔대에서 20만 엔대의 작품이 중심이었고, 젊은 작가이기에 가능한 친근한 가격이었습니다.
앞으로 인기가 더 높아질 것 같으니, 일찌감치 손에 넣는 편이 좋을 듯합니다.
