The “Adachi Foundation for the Preservation of Woodcut Printing” (hereafter “Adachi Hanga”) — do you know this organization?The showroom is on basement floor B1. You can spend a quiet time there even on weekends.Beginning with ukiyo-e, for Japan’s traditional woodblock printing, to train its successors — with this clear mission, the organization drives various activities and initiatives. Its main activities are as follows:
Supervising reproduction ukiyo-e prints
Supervising the production of contemporary woodblock prints
Granting incentive funds to researchers in five fields: research, technique, painting, materials, and public relations
Conducting training to develop successors
Educational activities at home and abroad, such as technique demonstrations and woodblock-printing classes
Displaying prints at its permanent exhibition space (Mejiro, Tokyo)
Running the open-call “Adachi UKIYOE Grand Prize,” aimed at “discovering 21st-century ukiyo-e artists”
Supporting Membership
One of Adachi Hanga’s initiatives is a “supporting membership system.”
This is a membership organization that supports the various activities Adachi Hanga undertakes, backed by individuals and companies who understand the training of woodblock-print successors.
The annual fee is ¥20,000 per unit for individual members、¥100,000 per unit for corporate members, running for one year from the month you join to the end of the same month the following year.
And the member benefit is wonderful: you can receive one “woodblock print” printed by Adachi Hanga for each unit.The list of gift works is updated every year.The 2018 (Heisei 30) list of gift works (PDF) is hereThe gift works are not framed, so you may optionally either pay an additional ¥10,000 to have it framed, or frame it yourself however you like.
What Actually Arrived
Let me introduce the work that was actually shipped to me. *Adachi Hanga covers the shipping.
Since I frame at a shop I know, I ordered only the sheet, but the carrier was Sagawa Express and the packaging felt a bit precarious (it arrived safely, though).Without a frame, the packing is unstable, so take care.What I chose was “Gap in the City” by Tetsuro Imai, winner of the 8th UKIYOE Grand Prize.
The making-of is described in detail on Adachi Hanga’s website, so please take a look.Tetsuro Imai, Gap in the City, size: 345×230 mm, edition: 50Reflecting Adachi Hanga’s guiding principle of developing successors, the gift prints are handled by young carvers and printers.
For this Tetsuro Imai work, the carver was Hiromi Nakazawa and the printer was Saki Yamada.
The works change from year to year.
Beyond past masterpieces by the likes of Katsushika Hokusai and Utagawa Hiroshige, the list ranges widely, including collaborations with contemporary artists.This is the 2013 gift work: Hideaki Kawashima, WindIncidentally, the washi paper used as the support for Adachi Hanga’s works is said to be almost 100% “Echizen washi.”
Prints made on “Echizen washi,” arguably the top brand among washi papers, have a wonderfully fine texture.The credit noted the carver, printer, edition size, year of issue, and so on.These are works given for an annual fee of ¥20,000, but depending on the contemporary artist, the price can be quite a bargain.
It’s a great-value scheme: you become a member who helps carry on the culture, and on top of that you receive a print work.

The gift works are displayed in the showroom, so you can check them with your own eyes.
Isn’t it also a facility where you can feel satisfied even if you visit purely to enjoy prints?The showroom is about 10 minutes from JR Mejiro Station. It’s hard to find, so I recommend Google Maps.

이는 아다치 판화가 추진하는 각종 활동을 지원하는 회원 조직으로, 목판화 후계자 육성에 이해가 있는 개인이나 기업이 후원하는 것입니다.
연회비는 개인 회원 「1구좌: 2만 엔」、법인 회원 「1구좌: 10만 엔」이며, 입회 당월부터 이듬해 같은 달 말까지 1년간입니다.
그리고 이 회원의 특전이 훌륭한데, 아다치 판화에서 찍은 「목판화 작품」을 1구좌당 1점 받을 수 있다는 것입니다.증정 작품 목록은 매년 갱신됩니다.2018년(헤이세이 30년) 증정 작품 목록(PDF)은 여기증정 작품은 액자에 넣어져 있지 않으므로, 별도로 1만 엔을 지불해 액자 작업을 부탁하거나, 직접 원하는 대로 액자에 넣거나 임의로 선택할 수 있습니다.

필자는 단골 액자 가게에서 액자에 넣기 위해 시트만 주문했는데, 운송회사는 사가와 익스프레스로 포장이 다소 미덥지 않은 느낌이었습니다(도착은 무사했습니다).액자가 없으면 포장이 불안정하니 주의가 필요합니다.필자가 선택한 것은 제8회 UKIYOE 대상 수상자 이마이 데쓰로의 작품 「도회의 틈새」.

가쓰시카 호쿠사이나 우타가와 히로시게 등 과거의 명작은 물론, 현대 작가와의 협업 작품 등 폭넓게 리스트업되어 있습니다.이것은 2013년 증정 작품 가와시마 히데아키 《바람》참고로 아다치 판화 작품에 쓰이는 지지체 와시는 거의 100% 「에치젠 와시」를 쓴다고 합니다.
와시 중에서도 최고급 브랜드라 할 「에치젠 와시」로 찍은 판화는 매우 좋은 질감으로 마무리됩니다.크레딧에는 조각사, 인쇄사, 작품(에디션) 수, 발행 연도 등이 기재되어 있었습니다.2만 엔이라는 연회비로 증정되는 작품이지만, 현대미술 작가에 따라서는 알찬 가격이 되는 경우도 있을 듯합니다.
