I visited Arisa Nakahara’s solo exhibition. The venue is “Gallery Shukado” in Ginza.
Arisa Nakahara, 《灯影》
Arisa Nakahara is known for works that finish female portraits—colored with vivid decoration—in an illustration-like style. At first glance they seem painted in acrylic, but with her background of graduating in Japanese painting (Nihonga) at Tokyo University of the Arts, they are genuine Nihonga.
Arisa Nakahara, 《爽やぐ》
A distinctive technique that, rather than leaning toward realism, conveys a design-oriented, symbolic approach.
None of the women’s expressions are smiles; they convey a dignified, composed atmosphere with a firm core—an impression of depicting strong women living in the present.
Arisa Nakahara, 《幻世》
Among the exhibited works, I was able to focus on 《かぐや》. The structural approach—arranging elements depicted within the work such as the moon, bamboo, and flowers across the picture plane while including patterns that evoke time—is interesting, and I felt a scale that doesn’t settle for simple depiction. The other works also have exquisite composition and felt meticulously calculated.
Arisa Nakahara, 《かぐや》
The works are sold except for some, but since she’s a popular artist, it’s a lottery-sales format.
Every work is housed in a frame chosen for compatibility, successfully giving the refined works a firm finishing touch.
Arisa Nakahara, 《羨望》
Everything seemed perfectly controlled, and I felt the gallery I usually visit was governed by a different air.
Arisa Nakahara, 《祥雲》
She seems to take on much work from companies as well.

Stable and uniformly excellent works. They don’t look like Nihonga made with mineral pigments, and the artist Nakahara’s point that she emphasizes “leaving no brush traces (erasing the presence of the author)” is an interesting approach.
Arisa Nakahara
I look forward to her further success in the future.
