I visited “1968: Art in the Turbulent Age,” an exhibition that looks back on art from 50 years before 2018. The venue is the Chiba City Museum of Art.
The Chiba City Museum of Art is a complex facility shared with the Chuo Ward Office; the exhibition rooms are on the 7th and 8th floors.
“1968: Art in the Turbulent Age” is, as the title suggests, an exhibition organized around the flow of art centered on the era around 1968, including its social context.The display feels like a time slip back to 1968 — Showa 43 — and gathers not only paintings and three-dimensional works but also crucial reference materials for revisiting the period, with the total exhibits reaching some 400 items. The two-floor exhibition space at the Chiba City Museum of Art was charged with an intensity that felt as if the dense atmosphere of the time itself had been reconstituted.
Against a backdrop in which the student movement was in full swing, the artists of the day had highly acute antennae for politics and culture, and the exhibition made it clear that they engaged in the work of making art from a place of powerful conviction.
The legendary discotheque MUGEN’s light show revived
“MUGEN,” the flagship psychedelic discotheque that opened in 1968, was recreated.
The lighting show was recreated with the cooperation of MUGEN producer Yasuhiro Hamano.
The music and living voices coming from the video work still brim with tension and a live-performance charge 50 years on, hitting the ear with real force.

I was also struck by how the exhibition covers, without omission, phenomena that mark real turning points when viewed from the present — the new form of artistic practice known as Mono-ha, and the fever and counter-movements surrounding Expo ’70 in Osaka.
It was a superb, content-packed exhibition in which the time flew by.

正如标题所示，”1968: Art in the Turbulent Age”是一场围绕1968年前后时代背景、以美术流变为核心策划的展览。这场如同穿越回1968年——昭和43年——的展示，不仅包含绘画和立体作品，还纳入了回望当年不可或缺的重要资料，展品总数多达约400件。分布在Chiba City Museum of Art两个楼层的展场，充满了仿佛把当年浓密的空气原样重现出来的热度。

“1968: Art in the Turbulent Age” 전시는 문자 그대로 1968년 전후의 시대 배경까지 아우르며 미술의 흐름을 중심에 두고 기획된 전람회입니다.1968년, 쇼와 43년이라는 시대로 타임슬립한 듯한 이 전시는 회화와 입체 작품뿐 아니라 당시를 되돌아보는 데 중요한 자료까지 포함해 약 400점에 달하는 방대한 규모로, 두 개 층으로 나뉜 Chiba City Museum of Art의 전시장은 마치 그 시절의 농밀한 공기를 그대로 재현한 듯한 열기로 가득했습니다.
학생운동이 격렬했던 시대 배경 속에서 당시 아티스트들이 정치와 문화를 향해 세우고 있던 안테나는 매우 예민했고, 강한 문제의식 위에서 작품 제작에 임했다는 사실이 전시를 통해 뚜렷하게 전해졌습니다.
전설의 디스코 MUGEN의 라이트 쇼가 부활
1968년에 문을 연 사이키델릭 디스코의 대표주자 “MUGEN”이 재현되어 있었습니다.
MUGEN 프로듀서 Yasuhiro Hamano의 협력으로 재현된 라이팅 쇼.
영상 작품에서 흘러나오는 음악과 당시 사람들의 육성은, 50년이 지난 지금도 긴장감과 라이브 감각으로 가득 차 우리의 귀를 자극합니다.

또한 Mono-ha라 불리는 새로운 예술 실천의 형태, 그리고 Osaka Expo ’70을 둘러싼 열광과 반대 운동 등, 현재의 시점에서 되짚어 볼 때 전환점이 되는 사건들을 하나도 놓치지 않고 전해주는 전시 구성 역시 주목할 만하다고 느꼈습니다.
볼륨감 넘치는 전시로 시간이 순식간에 지나간, 훌륭한 전람회였습니다.
1968年、昭和43年という時代にタイムスリップしたような展示は、絵画作品や立体作品だけでなく、当時を振り返る上で重要な資料等も含めて約400点もの展示数量に及び、2フロアに分かれている千葉市美術館の展示会場が濃密な当時の空気を再現しているかのような熱気に満ちていました。
