This is a group show of young artists organized by “Artglorieux,” the gallery at GINZA SIX. The previous Vol.1 featured artists gaining wide attention such as Yu Kawashima and Nozomi Hirata.
This second installment felt a little smaller in headcount, but the lineup still included artists worth watching and we thoroughly enjoyed it.

Here we introduce five artists whose work left a strong impression.
Ai Kumehara
When it comes to Ai Kumehara’s shows in Tokyo, the writer has recently attended almost every single one.
What was different this time was that her works were shown “framed.” Framing gives them a very different atmosphere — a fine effect.
Ai Kumehara shows five works in total. The large center piece is “Unfading Fragrance,” M10; on the right, “Awayuki (Light Snow),” M4.
I especially liked “Ozakazuki (Great Sake Cup)”: the gold framing suited the work and gave it a dazzling impression. It felt like a mode of painting different from her past work.
The two small pieces on the left are both “Kogarashi (Cold Winter Wind),” S0 size, at 54,000 yen (before tax). On the right, “Ozakazuki (Great Sake Cup),” M4.
The small “Kogarashi” recalls “Nukutoshi (Warmth)” shown at the “Kochifukaba” exhibition in January 2018 — it brought back memories of that time.
Mitsuru Ichikawa
The matière — layered on and then carved out — is a treasure chest of color. Mitsuru Ichikawa possesses outstanding technique and painterly power.

Kayoko Kimura
Kayoko Kimura’s flower works astonish when seen in person. They are mysterious pieces that go beyond ultra-realism. Categorizing her among “young artists” almost felt disrespectful.
Yukyo Yamamoto
Known for his one-yen-coin works, this was my first time seeing Yukyo Yamamoto’s smaller pieces. They somehow seem harder to pull off than his larger works. His female-subject works are quite intriguing.
The impact of the large-scale work I saw before at the Nikkei Nihonga Grand Prize Exhibition remains vividly etched in my memory.
Wataru Shimizu
An artist who paints beautiful nihonga.
“Flight,” depicting cranes, was wonderful.
Young they may be, but a show packed with such formidable talent is a calm and reassuring one to view.

GINZA SIX의 갤러리 “Artglorieux”가 기획하는 젊은 작가들의 합동전. 지난 Vol.1에서는 Yu Kawashima, Nozomi Hirata 등 주목받는 젊은 작가들이 등장한 기획이었습니다.
이번 제2탄에서는 인원수가 조금 줄어든 인상이지만, 주목할 만한 작가들이 등장하여 즐거운 시간을 보냈습니다.

인상에 남은 다섯 명의 작가를 소개하고자 합니다.
Ai Kumehara
Ai Kumehara의 도쿄 전시라면 최근 필자는 거의 개근 중입니다.
이번에는 작품이 “액자에 담긴” 상태로 전시된 점이 이전과 달랐습니다. 액자로 마감하니 분위기가 또 달라져 참으로 좋았습니다.
Ai Kumehara의 출품작은 총 5점. 중앙의 대작은 “Unfading Fragrance” M10, 오른쪽은 “Awayuki(옅은 눈)” M4.
금색 액자가 작품과 잘 어울려 화려한 인상을 준 “Ozakazuki(큰 술잔)”가 좋았습니다. 이전 작품에서는 볼 수 없었던 필법 같은 느낌을 받았습니다.
