ロンドン、ニューヨーク、ロサンゼルスで開催される国際的なアートフェア「FRIEZE」。
2022年9月、アジアに進出。韓国ギャラリー協会と提携し「FRIEZE SEOUL」として開催されました。
会場は、コンベンションセンターなどの複合施設「COEX(コエックス)」3階のホールCとホールD。本展は、韓国最大のアートフェア「KIAF（Korea International Art Fair）」の同時開催となっており、1階フロアで開催されたKIAF（ホールAとB）とのアクセスがスムーズに出来、初日のVIPプレビュー日から多くの来場者で盛り上がっていました。

The COEX complex, which served as the venue
FRIEZE is an international art fair held in London, New York, and Los Angeles.
In September 2022, it expanded into Asia. In partnership with the Galleries Association of Korea, it launched as “FRIEZE SEOUL.”
The venue was Halls C and D on the third floor of COEX, a large convention and complex facility. The fair ran concurrently with KIAF (Korea International Art Fair), Korea’s largest art fair, held in Halls A and B on the first floor. Access between the two floors was seamless, and from the opening VIP preview day the venue was already lively with a large number of visitors.

Frieze ticket holders were also allowed entry to KIAF.
Since the tickets were digital, visitors held their phones up to have the barcode scanned at entry.

Frieze Seoul invitees were also automatically granted access to KIAF, though entry only started at 5 pm — a bit later than the Frieze opening. *KIAF’s own VIPs were admitted from 2 pm.
Since re-entry was free, we recommend spending a full leisurely day at the fair, taking breaks at the cafés and restaurants inside COEX when your feet get tired. The B1 floor of COEX is a large shopping mall, which made spending the day very comfortable.

The scale was very large, and it takes considerable time to see everything. Comfortable shoes and preparations are essential.
As for the content, with more than 110 galleries from 20 countries gathered together, the fair was truly international and richly varied.

The first-ever Asian edition, Frieze Seoul 2022.
The venue was blessed with a large turnout and was filled with excitement. Alongside collectors from within Korea, many collectors from other parts of Asia gathered as well, and even from Japan there were many familiar faces in the art world and among collectors.
The fair was centered around mega-galleries and filled with strong, ambitious works, and it felt as though many high-priced works were also marked SOLD. It seemed as if the surrounding galleries and museums — indeed the entire city — supported the excitement of the fair. For art fans, it must have been an irresistible event.
Looking forward to Frieze Seoul 2023
Frieze Seoul has already confirmed its next edition for 2023.
For a global art fair of this scale to be held in Japan as well, many challenges will need to be resolved — but for now, we simply want to applaud the success of the fair in our neighboring country.

이번 Frieze 티켓 소지자는 KIAF에도 입장이 가능합니다.

Frieze Seoul 초대 관람객은 KIAF에도 자동으로 입장이 가능하지만, 17시부터로 다소 늦은 시간대였습니다. ※KIAF의 VIP는 14시 개장부터 입장이 가능합니다.
출입이 자유롭기 때문에 걷다 지치면 COEX 내부의 카페나 음식점에서 쉬어가며 하루를 여유롭게 즐기는 것을 추천합니다. COEX의 B1층은 대형 쇼핑몰이어서 편안하게 시간을 보낼 수 있었습니다.

Frieze Seoul은 크게 두 개의 블록으로 나뉘어 C홀, D홀 두 곳에서 개최되었습니다.
전시장은 COEX 3층 C홀과 D홀
매우 넓은 공간에서 열리기 때문에 전부 관람하려면 상당한 시간이 걸립니다. 걷기 편한 신발과 준비가 필요할 것입니다.
이번 페어의 내용. 20개국, 110곳 이상의 갤러리가 집결한 만큼, 국제색이 짙고 매우 충실한 구성이었습니다.

아시아 최초 개최가 된 Frieze Seoul 2022.
전시장은 많은 관람객으로 뜨거운 열기가 가득했습니다. 관람객은 한국 국내는 물론, 아시아 각지에서 컬렉터들이 모여든 듯 보였고, 일본에서도 낯익은 미술 관계자와 컬렉터들이 많이 다녀간 듯합니다.
메가 갤러리를 중심으로, 힘을 실은 출품작으로 구성되어 있었으며, 고가의 작품에도 SOLD가 많았던 것으로 느껴졌습니다. 주변의 갤러리와 미술관 등, 도시 전체가 아트페어의 열기를 뒷받침하는 듯한 인상이었습니다. 아트 팬에게는 정말이지 참을 수 없는 기획이었을 것입니다.
Frieze Seoul 2023에도 기대
Frieze Seoul은 이미 내년 개최도 확정된 듯합니다.
이러한 글로벌 아트페어가 일본에서도 개최되기 위해서는 해결해야 할 많은 과제가 남아 있어 보이지만, 이웃 나라에서의 개최가 무사히 성공을 거둔 데 대해 우선 박수를 보내고 싶습니다.
