I visited Ibuki Minami’s solo exhibition “RISING.”
The venue is Seibu Shibuya. It is her second solo exhibition in Japan, following her 2019 show at Miura Jiro Gallery.

Ibuki Minami’s practice is carried out through the technique she calls algorithm.
A canvas with the algorithm inscribed on it — this piece was exhibited and sold as a work that simply transfers the algorithm onto canvas.
The algorithm is a symbolic notation into which she distills the finished image she envisions before painting. What art-makers normally hold in their minds she instead translates into signs, laying them out openly on the canvas.
These signs can only be deciphered by the artist herself. Example: “OPR” is short for Operation.
According to her, not all of her works are algorithmized, and the meaning of the signs is never disclosed to the viewer.

The show includes roughly 200 works overall, including mid-run rotations, and sales — from small pieces to large-scale works — were extremely strong.

Going forward, she plans to build her foundation through further exhibitions in Japan while actively expanding overseas — including the United States, where she studied for five years.

Ibuki Minami의 제작 방식은 그녀 스스로가 알고리즘(algorithm)이라 이름 붙인 방법을 통해 이루어진다.
알고리즘이 그려진 캔버스 — 본 작품은 알고리즘을 그대로 캔버스에 옮긴 작품으로 전시·판매되었다.
알고리즘이란, 그녀가 그림을 그리기 전에 머릿속에서 떠올리는 완성 이미지를 기호화하여 담아내는 방식이다. 일반적으로 미술가가 머릿속에서 이미지를 떠올리는 과정을 그녀는 기호로 옮겨 캔버스 위에 드러낸다고 한다.

그녀의 설명에 따르면 모든 작품이 알고리즘화되는 것은 아니며, 관람자에게는 기호의 의미가 밝혀지지 않는다.

회기 중간에 교체된 작품까지 포함하면 전시작은 약 200점에 이르며, 소품에서 대작에 이르기까지 판매는 매우 호조를 보였다.

앞으로는 일본에서 전시를 이어가며 기반을 다진 뒤, 5년간 공부한 미국을 포함해 해외에도 적극적으로 진출할 의지를 가지고 있다고 한다.
