We visited Tatsuhito Horikoshi’s solo exhibition “Imagination before sleep.”
The venue was the Takashimaya Art Gallery in Shinjuku.

Tatsuhito Horikoshi is an artist with about ten years of painting career.
While he has been active mainly at overseas art fairs and domestic events, this was apparently his first time exhibiting in such a spacious venue.
The works shown in the wide exhibition space are centered around size 8 to size 12 pieces. The work on the right is his most recent piece.
The work using a circular canvas, 《The Way he looks》, which was also featured on the DM, was truly outstanding.
When we asked the artist himself while he was at the gallery, he told us it was “a work I made when I was mentally down.”
The boy in the canvas gazes forward with warm eyes, giving a positive impression.

In addition to boys, there are also works depicting women.
The portraits in each work show no smiles, wearing suggestive expressions as if something lies beyond their gaze.

The backgrounds, clothing, and accessories worn by the subjects invite viewers to conjure a wide range of imaginings.

Together with the suggestive titles of the works, viewers will engage with each piece in their own way.
At first glance the works look like acrylic paintings, but all are executed in oil.
Within the solo exhibition, a unified space also created an air of tension.
Life brings both good and bad times; perhaps like works that depict the ordinary state where no expression is put on, the models in Horikoshi’s paintings wear the most natural of expressions.
The artist Horikoshi’s own gentle gaze seemed to shine especially brightly within the gallery — an impression that lingered with us.

Tatsuhito Horikoshi 씨는 화업 10년 정도의 작가입니다.
주로 해외 아트페어와 일본 국내에서 활동해 온 것으로 보이는데, 이번처럼 넓은 공간에서 전시를 여는 것은 처음인 듯했습니다.
넓은 전시 공간에 전시된 작품들은 8호에서 12호 정도의 작품이 중심입니다. 오른쪽 작품이 가장 최근의 작품.
DM에도 채택된 원형 캔버스 작품 《The Way he looks》는 특히 뛰어난 완성도를 보였습니다.
전시장에 계신 작가 본인에게 여쭤보니 “정신적으로 힘들었을 때 제작한 작품”이라고 하셨습니다.
캔버스 속 소년은 따뜻한 눈빛으로 앞을 응시하고 있어 긍정적인 인상을 주었습니다.

소년 외에도 여성을 그린 작품들도 있습니다.
각 초상 작품에는 미소가 없고, 시선의 그 너머에 무언가가 있는 듯한 의미심장한 표정을 짓고 있습니다.

얼핏 아크릴화처럼 보이지만, 모두 유화로 제작된 작품입니다.
개인전 회장 안에서는 통일된 공간에서 오는 팽팽한 긴장감도 느껴졌습니다.
좋을 때도 나쁠 때도 있는 인생 속에서, 표정을 짓지 않는 평상시의 상태를 표현한 작품처럼, 작품 속 모델들은 가장 자연스러운 표정을 지어 보이고 있는지도 모릅니다.
작가 Horikoshi 씨의 온화한 시선이 전시장 안에서 유난히 빛나고 있는 듯한 인상적인 전시였습니다.
