“A Christmas of Giving Art as a Gift” was held at GINZA SIX.
It was a project featuring one-of-a-kind artworks for sale, and among them, the works that truly stood out were two pieces from painter Masato Kobayashi’s “Model of the Star” series.

Though small in scale, these are characteristic works by Masato Kobayashi, painted directly by hand rather than with brushes.
I have not seen it personally, but apparently he also assembles his own supports. The support on the left, “Model of the Star #39,” is quite mysterious: a canvas is affixed to a board, with nails piercing it here and there in a way that defies explanation. Normally a canvas is fastened to the stretcher from the back, but here it seems to be fastened from the front…
Some passages of the paint are applied thinly, while others are laid on thick—a whole world compressed into a small canvas.
I found myself thinking, “Take me home!” but then hesitated when I saw the price. Works by an artist of such renown do command high prices, on an entirely different order from those of younger artists.
Even so, as I kept looking, it felt as if countless somethings had been embedded within the surface, giving rise to an almost dizzying sense of elation.
Each work is priced at “350,000 yen (tax included)”
I only recently learned that Masato Kobayashi is a professor in the Department of Painting at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Tokyo University of the Arts, and that he was the mentor of the young painter Atsuko Yamashita. Looking at her work, one can feel his influence.
I am a great fan of Atsuko Yamashita’s work and collect her pieces, so I was seized with a strong desire to hang Masato Kobayashi’s work beside them. I hope one day, after saving enough, to add one to my collection…
GINZA SIX에서 열린 “아트를 선물하는 크리스마스”.
1점물 아트 작품이 전시・판매되는 기획전이었는데, 그중에서도 눈에 띈 작품이 바로 화가 Masato Kobayashi의 《이 별의 모델》 시리즈 두 점이었다.

작은 작품이었지만, 붓을 사용하지 않고 직접 손으로 그리는 Masato Kobayashi다운 작품이다.
실제로 본 적은 없지만, 지지체도 스스로 조립한다고 한다. 사진 왼쪽의 《이 별의 모델#39》는 지지체가 참으로 신비로워, 판 위에 캔버스를 붙이고 여기저기 못이 박혀 있어 의미를 알기 어렵다. 통상 캔버스는 뒷면에서 나무틀에 고정하는데, 여기서는 정면에서 고정한 것일까······.
작품에는 물감이 얇게 칠해진 부분도 있고, 부분적으로 두껍게 얹은 곳도 있어, 작은 캔버스 안에도 응축된 세계가 담겨 있었다.
“우리 집으로!” 하는 마음이 절로 들었지만, 가격을 보고는 주저하고 말았다. 명성이 있는 작가의 가격은 역시 만만치 않다. 젊은 작가와는 자릿수가 하나 다르다.
그럼에도 작품을 바라보고 있노라면 그 속에 무언가 수많은 것들이 감춰져 있는 듯한 느낌이 들어, 현기증이 날 만큼의 고양감이 밀려온다.
작품 가격은 각 “350,000엔（세금 포함）”
최근에야 알게 된 사실인데, Masato Kobayashi는 Tokyo University of the Arts 미술학부 회화과의 교수이자, 젊은 화가 Atsuko Yamashita의 은사에 해당한다고 한다. 작품을 보아도 그 영향이 느껴진다.
필자는 Atsuko Yamashita의 작품을 매우 좋아해 컬렉션하고 있는데, Masato Kobayashi의 작품을 그 옆에 두고 감상하고 싶다는 강한 욕구가 일었다. 돈을 모아 언젠가 소장하고 싶다는 마음이 들었다······.
